New Starship Options

And the biggest question is:

Does one have to pay royalties to Mongoose Publishing for using what is an almost straighforward rip-off from HighGuard?

Nit: I'd change 'Standard' to 'Basic', and 'Basic Mil/Civ' to 'Standard Mil/Civ'. Names, not capabilities.

The SRD for high guard includes almost all the text. So, no.

Two points...

1: I noted in my post that it was lifted pretty much exactly from basic and high guard, and was just a conversion of said material.

2: Because I'm not making any money from it, no royalites need be paid.

IMHO that goes a bit to far no matter if royalties are involved or not. It's basically a direct quote from another systems rules set. A refence to the SRD would have been enough for that

Surely Mongoose's license allows them to quote anything they want from High Guard?

You need to understand what an SRD is... it's the text that you are allowed to quote/use/modify without any need for royalties just by putting the content under the same open license.

Essentially, it's text that's been released for exactly what he's done... use elsewhere.

Look, let's not worry about it eh? I work with SRDs, I know how they operate. Regardless, the thread was about the CONVERSION that was done from one system to the next, not about the text that went along with it. I've removed the post, and won't worry about adding anything else. Let's just say it never happened, and those that have issues should go and have a read of an SRD document to get their facts straight.

BTW, I won't say it again. I quoted in the original post where I drew the information from.

A bit thin-skinned aren't we. Originally the royalties where meant as a hint at the rather 1:1 copy. But ultimately I considered it a useless post since a link to the SRD material would have done the same so I did not correct the misunderstanding.

Nice apology...

<sarcasm off>

I didn't read it as mancerbear being thin skinned at all. Just not interested in fighting about it on the board. A better approach imo than yours. You could have worded your issue with the original post much better don't you think.

Or, if you had a real problem with some legal aspect of the original post the proper procedure was to report it.

If you thought it was pointless then why reply at all.

If you think it could have been done with a simple reference to the SRD then that would have been, and could have been worded as, a helpful suggestion.

Instead you come off as antagonistic and self-righteous.

I hope you haven't driven off a member and mancerbear gives you and the forum another chance.

Yeah. Hey mancerbear, why don't you repost what you had before? I actually had meant to comment on the thread earlier, but was afraid I might have hijacked it a bit, but I can certainly understand how frustrated you must feel that you posted a thread and the only reply you got was a criticism.

a) It was not an apology. I see absolutely no reason for one

b) No, I could not have worded my initial answer any better without using rude terms

c) Mancerbear does not get another chance from me. I don't waste my time on copy&paste stuff

naturally

b) No, I could not have worded my initial answer any better without using rude terms

obviously

c) Mancerbear does not get another chance from me. I don't waste my time on copy&paste stuff

unsurprising

...forgive my naive optimism

Let me suggest then you simply put mancerbear on your ignore list and if they ever post again you won't have to suffer.

...and maybe I'm being a bit harsh on you mbrinkhues. I do apologize for that, brought on by your own negativity as it was.

I get the feeling you're burned out on Traveller and RPGs, by your own admission and general posting recently. My advice, sincere and with the best of intentions, do what I do when I get that way. Step back and take a vacation from all the Traveller and RPG boards. Reconnect with RealLife for a bit and regain perspective. Do other things. If after that you feel like returning maybe you'll find it fun again.

No, you are not. I was going to report it so we could have the mods-discussion behind closed doors... you've pretty well summed up my view of the issue tho', in your other post.

No apologies needed. I dish out and take in, part of the game.
