News: Astronomers think they have found an alien megastructure

(If there is more a more appropriate part of the forum, please would an admin move this? Thank you in advance)

Astronomers may have found giant alien 'megastructures' orbiting star near the Milky Way

It'll no doubt be thoroughly debunked tomorrow, but for now:

A star identified by the Kepler Space Telescope may harbour structures which could point to an adanced technological civilisation

I couldn't get through it. I have read another report on the same paper.

I understand that there is some weird stuff concerning the light curve, that it gets unexpected and apparently random dips. That the IR light indicates that it is not an asteroid belt causing the dips. The size of the dips in the light curve and their timing and shape rule out sunspots. But there is no evidence of any intelligence involved.

When the Crab Nebula pulsar was discovered, the first thing the press assumed it was were Little Green Men sending us a message. That was back in the 1960's, 50 years ago. Things don't change that much.
