NPC morale

Anyone have any rules/modifiers regarding morale? Mercenary makes it seem like non military will break at the drop of a hat and I'm not all that thrilled with the system in CT's TTB either. If I end up using mercenary what would permanently improve a persons morale or make it worse? Winning a firefight probably improves it, but how many would you require before it got bumped up? Would you put a cap on improvements?

The Pirates of Drinax campaign by Mongoose has a morale system for the your crew of pirates based upon the actions of the party and whether or not they are getting their share of the "booty" along with their normal pay.

Mercenary makes it seem like non military will break at the drop of a hat ...

And this is pretty much true. Low organization, little or no training, little or no experience.

"Military" itself sort-of means training as a fighter in an armed force. Lack of that means... yeah, you'll break at the drop of a hat. Something crucial will be unknown or unattended and expose the group to quick failure.

Found the experience rules from Striker, I think I can work with that and Mercenary, those merchants need some basic training though, lowest is a 3 which granted is better than a 1.

You might want to do some reading on small units actions if you are going to have a fair amount of combat. Personnel in their first fire fight, even if trained, have a high tendency to freeze and dive for cover, without returning fire.

As for morale, if these actually are merchants, your best option would be to give them a "win or die" situation. By definition, merchants are not interested in fighting, but making money.
