hmmmm I was working on a char that was in the navy had gone threw OTC in University and then serverd 2 terms in the navy and was promoted both times to O3 now if he Mustered out of the Navy and switched to Engineer ( he was a Starship engineer in the Navy ) would he enter as a Commisened or Enlisted char in the Engineer Prior History ?

Well I think there was some discussion in the playtest area (which is where the Engineer class is until the new Player's Guidebook comes out with that and other new classes and stuff), but this applies to the same issue for the current classes in the Traveller's Handbook so discussion is good here.

I think imtu the way it'll work is if you leave under good terms you'd take the old rank less 1 as the starting rank in your new career if it is rank structured but there would be no officer promotion roll in the first term in the new career.

So your ex-Navy Lt. Cmdr. (rank O3) would enter the civilian engineering field as a titled Engineer (rank O2) and after proving his worth to the company for a term be eligible for promotion.

Another example would be an ex-Army Sgt. F.C. (rank E4) entering employment as a Mercenary. They would start as a Sgt. (rank E3) but being enlisted they would be eligible for commission and promotion in the first term.

Finally the case of an O1 transferring is a special matter. They would not be busted down to enlisted rank but keep the O1 when transferring and not be eligible for promotion in the term they transfer just like other transferred officers.

In all these cases only the previous term of Prior History would apply. For one example a character reaching rank O4 in a service, then doing a term in an unranked service before finally landing in a ranked service again would find themselves starting at E1 with the normal chance for commission and promotion. Another example would see an E4 transfer to a ranked service at E3 and presuming no promotions there would then transfer to a third ranked service as E2.

Least that's how I'm thinking it should work.

You're welcome and I see no problem about the post, I don't think it's the wrong area for the question at all
Just note that this is only my opinion and in no way official but I think it balances things pretty well.

Actually the current official answer is the character goes back to square 1. (Even all the way to E-1.) The question Hunter answered refered to a Marine Officer mustering out and becoming a Mercenary still in prior history. Unless it changes in the final version of the TGP.
