Ok I broke down and ordered some 28mm figures

I looked at those a while back. Nice sculpts. Interesting scenery, too.

I'd love to see your paintjobs.

Infinity has some good ones, too.
 
Ok, the amusing thing is now there are tons of character figures available in 28mm.

20 years ago, 15mm was the place for character figures. In science fiction that is.
 
I could see that being good for wargaming.
15mm is not bad for RPGs, in a lot of ways they are easier to paint as the much less detail than 28mm so getting figures ready for the table is easier. The trick is to use brighter colors. In practice I generally have players chose a theme color then paint that on the rim of the base. (Note this works well with larger figures as well).

In the late 90's there hardly any SF character figures available in 25 or 28mm so 15mm was the choice.
