Once more into the breach.... of 3D modelling - Horronon ATV

Here is an image of the Horronon ATV from Double Adventure 2, drawn in FreeCad.

And here is it printed on my 3D printer - with a GZG 25mm and a Mantic Games 30mm mini next to it, for scale.

(and in case anyone noticed, yes, that's a MegaHex battle map underneath -I'm very excited for the Kickstarter for "The Fantasy Trip" - It and Traveller are my two favorite games)

I'm not happy with the laser cannon - the cannon itself is too small, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing - its something that could be man-portable, which would open up some possibilities (with a long enough power cable). I'll probably redesign it sometime later - it's not glued in, so I can swap it out.

I'll be slapping some paint on it over the next few weeks, and perhaps I'll embarrass myself by showing off my painting skills.

If anyone is interested, and if it's allowed, I can post the STL files in the File Library. I won't upload them to a "public" STL repository like Thingiverse as the model is derived from Marc's IP. I kind of munged up the connectors - had 4mm holes lined up, so I could use pegs to keep it together while it was being glued, but that didn't turn out so well, so I just glued it carefully.

Very nice work, I was expecting a picture and you have a fully realised model :)

Any plans to do more of the vehicles like this?

That is really nice - I still cannot justify a 3D printer. Soon I hope!

As a potentially related note: Mongoose will be doing another KS for Traveller mini-combat, at least from the hints given out so far. So we may be getting more 25mm (err, 28? 32?, gads - just stop changing!) Traveller minis at some point. Your ATV would fit right in for that.

And the few times I've tried 3D design it was a lot of frustration. I know it takes time - well, only another decade until I can retired and then I'll have time :)

I'm also in on the TFT Kickstarter - the classics such as Traveller & TFT are classics for a reason!

I tested out four or five programs - I'm an engineer and programmer, so I have found OpenSCAD and FreeCAD fit my way of thinking better. They have limitations, and don't handle organic shapes well, but it got me started. OpenSCAD uses a programming language to create objects, and FreeCAD uses parametric primitives.

The ATV was created in FreeCad - basically just a bunch of basic objects added and subtracted from each other. I'm sure I created it in the least efficient manner, but it worked.

And on TFT, since they are moving to 1.5 inch hexes, I've created bases to use my large collection of prepainted minis and pathfinder pawns on the MegaHex boards. I posted some pics on the google plus group.

The nice thing about 3D printing files is that they can be easily scaled.

Scaling this model to 45% puts it at 60mm long, which is about as long as my LaserBurn 15mm ATV. It would take 5 hours to print the sides, and probably about the same to print the body.

I personally can't do 15mm minis any more - some health issues are limiting what I can do with my hands (in fact, I may be selling my 15mm collection in the near future - they keep taunting me). But, perhaps once I get back from dropping my son off at college this week, I'll see what this will look like at 15mm.

That's pretty remarkable quality.

Did you print it in pieces and glue them together? Just print it "whole"?

How long did it take to print, and what kind of printer do you have, what material was this?

I printed the two sides and center separately and glued them together; saw some STL files of WH40k rhinos done the same way. I added peg holes so I could pin it together; that didn't work so well, so I glued carefully.

I have an Ender-3; a basic $200 filament printer. I added a glass bed because the aluminum bed that came with my printer was warped. There is a gentleman on YouTube who prints terrain and models for gaming, and he recommended it. After using mine, I also recommend it, with the caveat that a glass bed is almost a necessary upgrade. I used Hatchbox filament.

The two sides took about 12 hours to print together and the body took about the same (0.1 mm layer - CURA's default "fine" quality with the stock nozzle). No supports, although if I was to print another one, I would add supports to the front "tow hook". That had a slight defect.
