A bit of historical trivia: although many SF writers predicted Americans landing first on the moon, none of them predicted it would be broadcasted world-wide on television.

My contribution: subdermal computer tattoos. Using superconductive fluid inks and microcircuitry injected at key points a tattoo pattern in the skin acts as bothe connector and circuitry for a computer you carry with you all the time, powered by you own bioelectric field. Includes a tattoo screen of liquid crystal and a surgically implanted jack to connect with other computers. The more elaborate the tat', the more memory. Note: roll against End/Con for tissue rejection. Price varies with size of tat'.
 
And, when you get old, and the tatoo has ... ummm, "shifted", will you get screen distortion? Or, even computer hangups? And, how do you reboot this computer? (Terrible visions enter my head, here! :eek: ) Oh, and "crash cart" takes on a whole new meaning when the paddles are applied to someone in cardiac arrest.... :nonono:
 
With the "computer" tatoo and a minature camera chip implant - you could literally:

1) buy a photographic memory
2) have eyes in the back of your head (would require more advanced direct neural I/O device - but we're almost got that in the RW.)
3) be a walking encylopedia

On the more commercial side you could also be a programable walking billboard.

The possibilities are mindboggling - and would likely be more limited by social acceptance than by science.

It is likely that a lot of cyber won't be; it will be hard-coded for safety purposes.

It's like the one signboard I got to play with. The CPU is an ASIC; it includes a rom with all the operating code. It can only display the contents of ram, not execute instructions from it. You can't virus it; there is no executable code accepted from the ram.
 
Ummmm. And just where would that repair port be? :oo: And, wouldn't that be a common crime: mug someone, steal their ROM (if its the newest stuff), and leave them in a tub full of ice? :confused:
 
The ice would be unneeded. The port would probably be covered by hair, but be centerline back of head or be right behind an ear... and require tools, not surgical instruments.

Stealing cyber is less likely than stealing a wallet... since stealing the rom presupposes you have the same model rom socket, and correct processor, etc.

We're probably talking about a mounted chip under 5x10x2mm... in a locked slot 5.1x2.1mm... under a rubber bung. Hard to handle, not easyto extract quickly, and with the right tools, extractable with no discomfort to the patient. (Since we have static rams of 1GB+ that size, a 1GB rom is perfectly reasonable in that size.)

And one is unlikely to know what version of OS is being run.

But much hardware, like that display discussed above, won't need upgraded chips anyway. The innate intelligence of a TV set needs only be so big; anything more is used for excess features, but a 1952 TV still shows modern TV programs (in the US, and only until Digital-only laws take effect.)
