Well, I slipped up on my timings. The new patch for Traveller Universe (1.7) will be available ... NOW!!!

And you can get it here.

(Those waiting to buy Traveller Universe, its still on track to be restocked on the weekend.)

Enjoy.

Question: Do I need the original CD to apply the patch? Mine has gone MIA and I don't want to render the app non-functional with the patch. (I'll be a bit peeved at myself if I can't find it and end up having to buy a new one...).

Its a low-TL patch: just copy the contents of the zip file into the application directory. (There's no harm in backing-up the application directory beforehand, if you like, just to be safe.) Not having the disk will only affect you when you need to reinstall Windows.

Another question then:

I have a desktop and a laptop. Did you want (require?) me to buy a second copy for the laptop? (You are about to say this is covered in the EULA, but I'm not handy to my desktop right now and who really reads those anyway? *grin*).

Thanks for the update info. I'll pull it down the fat pipe here at work and take it home via USB key.

I'm looking forward to Universe 2.0 as well, I must say.

I'm sure I've been asked this before but I can't remember what I said. I think it was something like ...

You do not need to have the front-end program on the same machine as InterBase and the databases. In fact one of the beta testers had InterBase running on a Linux box and ran Universe on his PC (in Referee mode) for himself and on a second PC (in Player mode) for his players. (TUmanager doesn't currently support this, so you'll need to change the ODBC settings, etc, manually.)

Now, the way I look at it, if either he or his players were running Universe: that would require one licence. If both he and his players were running Universe at the same time: that would require two licences.

On the other hand, if you want to install Universe on your desktop and laptop, but don't intend to run both simultaneously, then I guess that just requires one licence.

(As Universe is sold under the BITS label this interpretation may be overruled by BITS.)

Does that help?

Well, I don't intend to run both simultaneously. I hadn't considered the 'player's have one' 'ref has one' option. I was thinking that my desktop is at home and off when I'm using my laptop away from home (when my gaming goes on the road).

That brings to mind a question:
Do you think it would be hard to write some Interbase scripts to sync two identical versions of the DB? (Identical in schema, not content) I'm thinking if I take my laptop on the road and update stuff, I'd like to propagate that back to the desktop for ref work at home.

Or could I just copy in and out some subset of the DB files? (since I don't really need a two-way sync, I just need a one way update)

Thoughts?

<PS, and thanks, you did answer the question, though of course I will ask BITS too when I get some time>

A simple way to do this is use TUmanager to export a database on one machine, copy over the resultant .GBK file, and use TUmanager on the other machine to import it.

I'll research if there is a more elegant way of doing this. One feature (partially implemented in this release is to use MSSQL/MSDE instead of IB. MSSQL has something called 'replication' which allows you to synchronise multiple databases in a variety of ways (including just sending changes). I'll see if IB has something similar.

Quick heads-up: something not explained in the patch ...

After applying the patch, run Universe, go to "Properties" from the main window, and check out "TU version". It should read "3 (revision 2)". If it says anything else then exit Universe and run TUmanager. There are some database upgrade buttons that I hope are self-explanatory.

Repeat for each database.
