Play By Post -- Looking for players

SOC-7
Classic Adventure
on the edge of the Imperium
during the Fifth Frontier War!

Strictly Business is a PBEM/PBP ‘classic campaign’ starting for Mongoose: Traveller.

The setting is the OTU in the classic period during the Fifth Frontier War in the Spinward Marches. The intention is to start off with a linear campaign structure starting in Glisten to get players & GM better acquainted and then allow a more relaxed sandbox style of play around District 268 linking sessions with a mixture of different types of adventures.

It is anticipated that much of the setting will focus on operating a starship, with trade being a necessary motivator. The overarching theme is that of fairly ordinary people in a series of extraordinary situations. Well played 'underdog' characters are generally favoured. The players will face many difficult choices between ethics and duty. Good roleplay will be encouraged and rewarded though the House Rules on Karma(XP) and Character Improvement.

A few aspects of the OTU will be ‘toned down’ to fit into a universe based on harder science rather than pure fiction, such as psionics, although as far as possible the GM will try to remain canonical. All relevant Mongoose Traveller material will be allowed by default, but specific rules may be considered on a case by case basis if not already listed on the main website. The only race available to PC’s will be human.

Mature, patient players will be best suited to this campaign. Notions of ‘winning’ will probably lead to disappointment, this is going to be a gritty campaign and may not pander to big egos. Combat should be considered very carefully and not taken lightly, House Rules concerning Combat have increased the plausibility & potential lethality. Player actions will have a realistic consequence.

If you can handle it and have the time to commit to posting three times or more a week reply to this thread or PM me. A good working knowledge of the rules would be an advantage, but is not essential. If you have roleplay experience I’ll help you through the rules. However, I do strongly recommend you own a copy of the Core Rulebook and also recommend a copy of the supplement Central Supply Catalogue, but a copy of the free SRD will suffice.

I've paid up front for 3 years of quality, unlimited hosting, put up a customized forum with secure dice & other features built-in. Come take a look and read more details here http://foxhole53.org All you have to do is supply good roleplay.

This sounds like an ideal sort of campaign for the way I like to play, and I am really jonesing for some Traveller, but I have no experience w play-by-post. Is there some sort of FAQ you could point me at to explain the mechanics of playing this way?

Posting Frequency?

I prefer to play Marines, if that is ok.

I've asked for people to post a minimum of three times a week, more is good so long as you don't burn out. I'm aiming for this to be a reasonably long campaign.

Check this link to my site to see my posting requirements and consequences.

Marine character is fine, so long as you're not the 'Battledress & PGMP' kind of marine who insists on fragging everything, but more the happy to be security/gunner on a tramp freighter type.

Do you have a lot of experience playing Traveller, especially Mongoose?

I will keep it in mind. I like to play, specially now that I can't do some of the things that I normally do.

But,
Got one game on the Mongoose forums
Got one game here at CotI and just started in on anothers (Blue Ghost's game).
Got one on another RPG game forum but it's kind of dead by several months. GM and I were the last ones, and honestly, in my current mind set (Chemo treatment to boot), I just am not that fast on being creative for a 1 on 1 game.

So, If official one of those dies, I will let you know and see if there is space to play yours (also depending on how the next few months of chemo and healing go too.)

There are a few around if you google them. You can have a look at my Guide to Posting which may be of some help.

The bottom line is that it's 'played' exactly the same as tabletop Traveller, only we have to wait for people to post. So rather than a condensed session we have a session that's spread out a bit. I'll do my best to keep the action moving, but it will inevitably have slow moments. Usually the slower pace means deeper roleplay, but the flipside is it often means slower paced action. Therefore if you are not the patient & mature type you may well get bored!

If you've got a good working knowledge of Mongoose and at least the Core Rules and are keen to try I'd be happy to help as much as possible if you're still interested. :)

Let me know what you think!

Dave, it would be a privilege to have you play in my campaign. I've thoroughly enjoyed playing TTGII with you and admire your detailed characters. Any time you want to join I'll make space at the next starport for you!

All the best and good luck with you chemo, Sir!

I have been playing Trav since 1978. Never touched a Mongoose. SRD will have to suffice, unless you are planning to flip to T5 in a few weeks.

No plans to flip to T5, currently. I'll wait until the hard copy is available and have a better read and consider it as a source of house rules.

SRD should be fine, I'll walk you through Mongoose chargen.

Room for another?

Congrats on the site, it looks pretty good. :)

I've played several PbP games, and GMed many more, in both Classic and Mongoose Traveller.

Been playing since about '80.

I like gritty realism, I don't like PC bashing. I have the core rules but not the CSC.

If I'll do, let me know.

Sure, you'll be my 8th player.

Eight is my hard limit, but experience has taught me that some players will drop out or just not post. It's good you like gritty realism and don't like PC bashing, that bodes well. Go to foxhole53.org and sign up and I'll add you to the campaign.

For anybody else reading this thread, we're currently full, although the game hasn't started yet (everybody is still rolling up) and people may drop out, feel free to come over and watch with the opportunity to join if we get more spaces.

Would love to play (by eMail)

Was thinking possibly a disgraced academic (archaeologist perhaps) or a invalided out Agent for a local noble/governor would either of these suit?

Most of my experience is CT but I own and have played some Mongoose too

I don't put any restriction on the type of character you can play. I have one player who has no Mong experience and frankly it was probably not a great idea.

Anyway, we're currently full with 7 active players and 3 on the waiting list, but you're welcome to come over and register and if we get more space you'd be welcome to join the campaign.

Could I join at some point? I'm detail oriented and you'll love the way I weave whatever character I have into the proceedings....

You're welcome to jump on the waiting list if you have Mongoose Traveller CoreRuleBook (CRB) and CentralSupplyCatalogue(CSC) and will post in character at least three times per week. :)

Go here and register and I'll put you on the waiting list and PM you as soon as we have an opening. :)

<snip>.. I have one player who has no Mong experience and frankly it was probably not a great idea. <snip>

Just for clarity on this, I'm quite happy with my (former) CT player who is learning Mong rules fast and has now acquired a copy of the CRB. I simply meant with a big group it is a lot of extra work for the poor old GM to help with chargen etc, so for the future I will regrettably avoid people with no Mong books while we have a large number of active players and players on the waiting list. :)

Nice Setup and a great idea

You know it hasn't been since about 1993 and when I purchased an Asimov Science Fiction magazine and saw advertisements for PBM games, that I've seen a PBM. So what a great way to update the idea and have an online post it version. Especially since it's for Traveller. Well done.

For those who may not know, Drive Thru RPG has both. I've found MgT to be a good evolution of CT concepts.

My only real complaint is that they should have done the character supplements as a part of the Core rules. The initial price would have been higher but less overall. I wonder how much business Mongoose has lost because of that?
