Porting from CT to MgT?

Has anyone tried porting over equipment (or anything else) to Mongoose Traveller from CT? I was wondering if it was hard to do.

I think CT equipment should port to MgT without fuss. That includes weapons. Ideally though you'd just swap the CT piece of equipment for the MgT one (MgT's Central Supply Catalog is your friend).

Book 2 starships also work fine, to a degree, if you assume a reasonable component mapping for the sensor suite for example. High Guard seems to be substantially incompatible between CT and MgT, however. Again, swapping standard designs for standard designs is the safest route, but you can grandfather in a CT design if your players don't want to part with it. Unfortunately (to me), MgT basic starships have a cruelly divergent drive potential table, so Jump Drive L (for example) does not give the same performance in both systems. This affects ships above 600 tons.

And -- here is where I am less certain -- MgT character generation seems to be roughly on par with advanced chargen in CT. However, converting basic CT characters may require a little beefing up.

That said, I think you might as well generate characters in Mongoose Traveller if you're going to play Mongoose Traveller -- or at least port them, walking thru chargen using existing characters as the template or goal.

The CT equipment, other than weapons and craft, generally is descriptive only, not mechanically derived, so porting it over is essentially a non-issue. The stuff which is mechanically relevant is already ported by Mongoose.

Weapons stats are quite different. All the CT weapons are ported already between MGT Core and Merc.

Vehicles other than ships - the core ones are already done, and the rest are best redesigned rather than ported, since the design rules are totally alien to each other. (Striker versus Sup 5).

Bk2 Ships can be ported directly, with a couple minor caveats. Smaller ships gain due to lower fuel tonnage and no computer tonnage. Bigger slow ships (800Td+) tend to lose a little bit due to larger fuel requirements. And MGT core caps at 2KTd, rather than CT's 5KTd. Also note that Bk2 designs are not directly limited in performance by TL, but by maximum drive sizes (which are TL limited).

Bk5 ships don't port so easily. I haven't bothered to work with MGT HG. But, in general, Bk5 designs should be redesigned. Note that smaller ones can be used with the MGT mechanics just by calculating hits, but that isn't so much porting as making do - it won't give the same performance.

Then again, i'm one of those who would MUCH rather that MGT had been built on HG rather than the Bk2 derived ACS.
