After a while the missing Malausian airliner gave me an idea what if a starships pilots were working with terrorists or pirates to steal the starship? What if an important government office was traveling "coach" and the plane was diverted to kidnap him or her?? Maybe the PCs are rescue workers trying to find the wreckage of the starship?

Just a few ideas...

Without going into details, as the details get political, one could reskin the Ukraine situation in the Jewell SS of the Spinward Marches, replacing Crimea with Esalin, and the Ukraine with either of:

• Chwistioch, Clan, Riverland, Ao-Dai, Foelen, Farreach (Impie Aggro)
• Ruby, Emerald, Jewell, Mongo, Nakege, Lysen (Zho Aggro)

The shared world of Esalin gets "reclaimed" by one side "To Protect our Nationals" and then claims are made against the core of the other side's worlds in the subsector

And then there's the whole "Bermuda Triangle" thing. Misjump is a great lead in for that. Also, Trans World Airlines Flight 800 exploded and crashed (but that could get political too, if you buy into the "paranoid theories").
