Secret of the 1.5 meter wide corridor revealed

Ranger

SOC-12
Alan Tudyk (Wash, the pilot) from Firefly gave an inteview recently that explians why all those ship corridors are so wide on all those Traveller deck plans. While explaining the changes they made to Serenity (the ship) for the movie:

Tudyk added, with tongue in cheek, "The hallways are a little bit wider to accommodate better acting... You need wider halls for better acting. The first rule of acting: wide open space."

So, now we know. Wide corridors for better acting. ;)

This was a though that popped into my mind refering back to a long burried thread here about a year ago called "Why 1.5m corridors?" When I read the article the other day I just connected the two in my mind and I thought "Aha, now I know!"

Hello all,

From CT: Book 2 Starships p. 21 "The preferred scale for the interior should be 1.5 meters per square, with the space between decks put at about 3.0 meters. One ton of ship displacement equals approximately 14 cubic meters. There for one ton equals about two squares of deck space."

From my copy of the American Institute of Architects "Architectural Graphic Standards" Student Edition p. 1.

Passageway minimum for 2 people 965mm (38 in).

Corridor minimum for 2 people 1065mm (42 in).
Corridor preferred for 2 people 1370mm (54 in).

add 20cm for 2 walls at 6cm each, (almost 3" each) and you get a nice 1.5m width counting bondary wall...

Besides, most Star Trek, bab 5, Star Wars, and other big-ship sci-fi have nice 3m corridors.

At least, SW has them for the big ships. I love the claustrophobia inducing nature of the corridors on the falcon.

Battlestar Galactica (The real one, not the Sci-Fi channel knockoff) has a variety of coridor types...

And add half the required wall to each side (not just the skinny line most deckplans show) and you come to right about 1.5m (about 60").

oops, me got distracted and Aramis posted it first ;)
