So, here's a scary thought

Is there Virus on Sabmiqys? The world is completely self-sufficient so there's no collapse issues, it's run entirely by machines, and it's TL 17. Not jump capable, but one Vampire coming insystem could transfer the tech easily enough...

I thought about this one a few years ago.

Basically, you have stable TL 17 AIs faced with unstable TL 16 AIs. I decided, that in my universe, the TL 17 AIs could eat the TL 16 ones for breakfast.

In fact, I used Sabmiqys as a fire break - a place avoided by Vampire ships, that keeps neighbouring worlds relatively safe, too.

Another interesting possibility would be if the Sabmiqys AIs learned to do what Virus does, started taking over Vampire ships, and thus acquired jump capability.

I concur..TL-17 Ai's would snack em up/ reform em! Maybe even Talk some "sense" into them...Definitely a good idea...Antares 2117, Sabiqmys...Xenophobic too. Another thing to consider-they weren't Imperial Technology! Beyond silicon, like the Deyo chips were..therefore immune to "common infection".
They might...*might* look at the Virus as a possible ally, or lesser bretheren needing "guidance" towards sanity...and I don't like my thoughts travelling down this slippery slope all of a sudden! EEK! A Machine run Pocket Empire in Antares!

I'll stop here!

Ah! I see you discovered the secret masters/founders of the dominate!

The Ai-17's of Sabiqmys the masters of The Dominate..hmmm. Antares 2117...thats a bit of a piece to Gateway-Ley though...(more than justa stretch, GAB). But, ye may have something there!

That's why it's a perfect conspiracy.

The Sabiqmys, eh? Why didn't I think about that.
I always figured their civilization was going nowhere, so what would be the motivation for expansion? Surely, not expansion for expansion own sake?

I was wondering if you MJD & Hunter are starting line up artists for the TNE supplement? If I might be so presumptious to suggest that you get in contact with Kevin McCann (as his pieces are sufficiently dark enough to break into a new milieu.) I have already spoken with him and he is eager to get his work to a larger audience, so far, he done Mecha stuff with SF milieu in mind, but, I am sure that he could do Traveller stuff if provided with some background stuff. MJD's words just invoke a thousand images, but, still for those who have not followed the Traveller canon. There might be a strange expression as they might think of the Virus as some sort of robotic plague. I think Mr.McCann's work will be able to convey the burnt legacy of the Hard Times, Black War and finally the darkness between the Stars, that is until the Fourth Imperium starts coming forth (See MJD you are winning converts amongst the heretics)

What a sec! Who says Sabmiqys is not compatible with Virus. What if they are the same or similar tech!?! Could Virus kill the AIs or can the Sabmiqys AIs harnass Virus.?

Someone mentioned an alliance. I say that's most definite if there is a technological connection.

FRACK ME!

Sabmiqys and Virus! You people scare me. Course we could wonder a bit about Ancient sites and whether they got hit by virus as well. You know, the old broken down piece of ancient tech that just didn't do anything until that deranged chip came along and started to activate and repair things for its own use. Then again, if you buy the theories that the Hivers and the Droyne don't like each other, and that the Hivers were responsible for Virus, than the Sabmiqys and any surviving ancient technology should get trashed by Virus.

Interesting topic by the way.

For Liam, Anthony, and Alanb: Would it be alright if some of your discussion gets reposted on the TML? My friend Larsen has got to here this stuff.

Fine by me.

Actually, this topic has come up before on the TML, but not for ages.

It is often associated with discussions of viruses that think they are Vargr.

Sabiqmys' sentient robots killed their masters...

They were perfect, their creators were not....

They saw no need to be contaminated, hence the meson guns...

Now comes the AI's of Virus (technically TL-16 self-aware machines-starships)...

That which had no reason to leave, now has a means to see the Universe, made over in Machine perfection....

The devil's Lieutenant question is--would they find the "eradication" of organics by AI-Virus' initial strains something to view with alarm (as the Reproducer Suicider/Doomslayer strains destroyed what they could not infect...

The answer depends on what strain made "first contact" with them.

I've read some of whipsnade's stuff. Its good.(on Free Lance Traveller site..)
If you want to Post-cross post go right ahead. This is brainstorming here...its public domain. But I'll not step foot on TML again. If I want flame war heartburn, I'll order the wife's chili fer dinner lunch every noon and night.

But feel free lad.
Thanx,

Ahh yes, the flame war. When one sends off an innocent post and some maniac takes offense and decides to shove charcoal up one's posterior.

Yep, been there, dealt with it.

Me and Larsen are sorta in a cross posting situation: he sends me stuff off of TML, and I try and pick good stuff off of Coti to send to him. Pretty neat set up. With so much stuff out there in Traveller these days, it pays to have a couple sets of eyes looking for neat stuff.

An equitable arrangement methinks. I have my eyes and ears inside BITs, and in the UK too. I keep apprised with an addy in me address book labelled "Heretics" fer em all. :D ;) , though some might prefer collaborator in truth, in idea hatching!

Not quite the canonical explanation ;) . The natives of Sabmiqys were killed by a virus brought back from their first interstellar probe, which also incidentally convinced the robots that bad things came from the stars. Virus would probably not change the robots' opinion that Bad Things come from space, but if Virus made any significant inroads before being wiped out (remember, Virus isn't a computer virus. It's a lifeform that lives on computer chips) the robots of Sabmiqys might decide they had to go out and eliminate the problem at the source.

Maybe even destroy those that developed Virus. They already had encounters with visiting humans in the past. They figure humans are down right dangerous.

I stand corrected.(bows) Thanx Anthony!
Quite possible for Virus to have made it to Antares in forms other than the berserker-destroyer strains. That of course is a debate for
how it worked/ how fast it mutated. MJD, will have final word, of course.
That could go either way...They might want to see what spawned these mad-hatter AI's.., or simply remain clammed up as usual. Persistent Vampire expansion towards them might cause them to get off heir collective AI-17 duffs and deal with them, either to be left alone, or co-opt them/ or just get an established neutrality going ("Hi, we're machines too, but we don't go off this rock killing lifeforms. Go away.")

Here's some of my thoughts

Sabiqmys probably doesn't care about Virus and TL13-15 vampire ships since they have tractors, jump damping, and early disintegrators to handle it. At TL 17 they can deal with a mutated attempt at early TL16 AI by humans. The collapse to the Wilds is probably something of a relief to them since the overall TL of humans over a wide area has dropped. There is less of a threat from invasion now than before.

Of course Sabiqmys might be interested in the Black Curtain if.....

They knew that some of their TL 17 surveilance cyborgs, sent out to keep an eye on the Third Imperium (make sure no one is gonna invade Sybiqmys) has been corrupted by Virus and new programming - reestablish the Third Imperium - has begun. These cyborgs, indistinguishable from humans, were able to gain control of vampire ships to do their bidding - subjugate the humans into rebuilding, reliving the Third Imperium. Of coures the new Emperor is one of these cyborgs which can survive for hundreds of years.

mmmm....

I think I'm rambling too much
