So, I've got MGT and...

...want to introduce it to new players.

A little background.

Been playing with my group for a while now, and frankly, I'm bored to death of our current game. Running it is no fun for me at all. So, I came to Saturday's game (we play monthly) and showed Mongoose Traveller around. One guy thinks it's fine, one guy hates the art (he like bright pretty pictures like in the Savage Worlds book, as he said) and the others are fixated on a one-shot I have no intention of revisiting (this is tied to the boredom thing).

So, I'm think that I'll be getting a new group. The Traveller bug has me fully in its hold. I want to play Traveller, and I want to play it now. After more than a year with 50 Fathoms, I want to gut myself. Arr!

So, the question - how to get new players for it? I plan to post on an RPG site here in Hungary, and from this people will be able to decide if they want to join me or not. What's a cool blurb to write for this game? To catch it all in a few sentences?

Frankly, been a while since I've done this...

Your advert will depend on the "type" of game you want to play. Care to fill us all in on some turn ons and turn offs for you as the ref?

To get the players you want you'll need to advertise the game you want to run.

And word of mouth is another great way to go. You have one player interested, run something with them in the meantime if you can, get a feel for the rules, and if they're having fun they might spread the good word and help explain it.

Let's see...

1. I want to use the random generation system. I hate the point-buy one with a passion.

2. My idea for the game at the moment is the Duke for the subsector is contracting freetraders and mercenaries to "spread the Imperium" through trade and...other things...after his subsector has just gone through civil war. The Duke is a former admiral who clawed his way to the top, and took over nominal leadership with the Imperium's faraway blessing. The war ended 4 years ago and he'd like to repair the economy now that his grip on power is cemented. Basically, lots of things to do for PCs. Think Firefly and the period after the Social War in Rome as my models.

3. Group should be mixed, 4-5 players. Looking for a mature group, which means 25+ in age (the players, not the characters).

4. Adventures/scenarios will be built around some pre-planned stuff and anything the PCs want to do, that is, I'll have Patron encounters, which will happen as the game goes, some tying to a main plot (which I've not decided on yet, but I was thinking along the lines of "freelance" agents for the Imperium), some not, but things are loose enough for the PCs to butt in with their own plots and plans.

Does that clear up anything? Ideas are vague at the moment, very vague...

This is a very good idea and I think I'll do this. Of my current group, one guy is for certain interested. Another guy I gamed with before has expressed intrest in any game other than fantasy (which is why he isn't playing with us now). So, this might be the start. But I wouldn't mind to attract one or two more...because I'm sure the others won't want to even try it.

You can't beat the 'beowulf' passage on the lid of the original CT box.

After all, it snared me...

Dunno if I'm allowed to quote it here?

Heh, that's true, though I'm thinking of using that as the tag for the first adventure, in media res as it were. I've got some ideas for the first session already...and it looks like Traveller will defintely be the game, for people totally unfamiliar with Traveller (one guy has read and played one session of T20, that's all).

Here is the advertising I use:
