STAR PROBE by J. Snider [TSR]

I've been looking for a copy of STAR PROBE by J. Snider (1975), but the prices range from YIKES to ZOINKS! I've gleaned precious few details about the game mechanics from what I can find on the intarweb, and I was wondering how much of the original mechanics (exploration, exploitation, first contact with aliens, etc.) I could keep by employing Classic Traveller instead. Does anyone with a copy of STAR PROBE (and mayhap even STAR EMPIRES), have any thoughts about such an undertaking?

The 'staggered square' map can be easily redrawn as hexes. I've heard that SE was 3D in that the worlds were also thought of as being distributed above and below the plane of the map, as opposed to the more managable 2D of CT. Changing that should be no problem.

Ideas welcome.

a CANDLE IN THE DARKNESS...

Oh man, did you bring back memories.

I bought STAR PROBE, and its sequel, STAR EMPIRES, even before TRAVELLER came out. Here's a few crunchy bits.

You are basically an independent explorer given financing and a ship by your government. After a tour, you sell your scan data and can re-outfit for another tour. You can also open a private account and sell your data to the military, which the civilian govt does not know about.

It's basically a resource game with a lot of random bits...too many, actually.

Steal...err...borrow this concept and use TRAVELLER to fill in the gaps. It would be a lot more fun. PM me for more details.

91 views and no bites? *sniff* :(

Yeah, not sure I'd heard of it before, didn't recognize the name anyway, but the cover sure looked familiar.

Have you tried posting on BoardGame Geek?

Let me guess, Troll and Toad is the only one offering and they're asking $100 :) I see the same crazy prices by them and a couple others pretty regularly for a wide range of "rare collectible" games on eBay and the net. Thing is unless they are printing fresh copies (not accusing, just observing) they aren't moving any at those prices because I've seen the same asking prices for years now.

LOL  Yup. That's about it. nobleknight's got a copy they've had for months but its bad quality and they want it for $35 (without the map). Most prices are through the roof. I've even looked around on tomeoftreasures and dragonsfoot for more info, but few people have heard of it.
