Starship creation soft

I just want to know if it is possible to create a ship construction software and distribute it for free with the current OGL declaration in the begining of the ship construction chapter.

I intended to do one in Java/Swing from the start, but as soon as I saw that statement, I thought it would be wasted work. What do you guys think?

( Sorry, I wanted to add this as a reply in the Software Thread, but it ended here, strange must be a code 18 )

summarizing other posts:

Get quicklinks permission first and everything is fine.

Without their permission, consensus seems to be that you shouldn't. However there are some fairly vocal "but everyone else does it, so you would get away with it" counters.

Correct.

Sooner or later a lawyer will hammer you. And they will legaly correct and in the current world that is all that matters. You can loose money on your 'ware; that's irrelevant. If you infringe you will get to be provided 3 meals a day by all those nations that have signed the current treaties.

Tilt! End of game.

Well, I don't think you'd get jail time, but someone would probably give you a cease & desist if they didn't want you doing it. I planned on doing one in VB as well, but figured I didn't want to hassle over licensing so if I do it will be for me only :(

Bah! Jail time is nothing. It's when they win a civil lawsuit against you (because you chose NOT to comply with the C&D) and you lose your house and your PC and your life's saving (income from your current job as a pizza delivery carrier) in the process, well, taking cyanide doesn't look that bad.

????

so, how many of you guys are lawyers?

geeze...here is some advice -- anyone giving you legal advice that you didn't pay for is full of it.

If you have a question go ask Hunter or ask a lawyer.

Have you looked at the High Guard Shipyard (HGS) program over in The Fleet forum? I've been using an older version for a while and it's very good.

Yeah I looked at it really fast, I will need to look again but it seems to do what I wanted to do. I will have to find myself another project.... Suggestions?

A T20 vehicle design program? HGS works well for ships and small craft, but not vehicles.

Hence my disclaimer. </font>[/QUOTE]yeah, but dispensing legal advice and then having a disclaimer in your sig is still suspect.

Disclaimers do not protect you from 'pretending' to be a lawyer, nor a doctor.

I'm not trying to blast you -- but I'm kinda tired of seeing all the legal advice being tossed around by folks that have no clue when what they *should* be saying is "dunno, talk to a lawyer" or "well, I did x and this is what happened to me".

disclaiming does not give license to act irresponsibly IMO

If you see someone who is suggesting doing something that is going to get them sued, a reasonable citizen can offer a reasonable suggestion. And should do so.

Nobody can sue me for offering this sort of advice. The legal boundary that I live in has a fairly simple legal system. If a reasonable person offers you reasonable advice, they are not at fault even if the advice turns out to be wrong.

Throughout our suggestions we were saying, talk to a lawyer because we think that you need quicklinks OK.

This is very different from us just saying "talk to a lawyer"

But they're not legal advice, they're friendly non-legal advice relating to the law.

Besides, no lawyer would dispense legal advice for free, unless he wishes to offer it on the client's first office visit.
