STAT THAT SHIP!

bryan gibson

Absent Friend
In keeping with a little bit of competition done on the TAS boards, I introduce STAT THAT SHIP!

Stat the picture! anything goes, any system, any stats within the very basic specs presented. Variety is king, and going with the picture presented, a breif detail of the thinking behind it is welcome!

Theres no prize but the bragging rights! Are you up to it?

The first vessel! The TNE Militarized trader. Envision a basic trader, using the pics as a cue - is it a military vessel? A commo ship? just a really armored trader? who knows? anything goes...so lets see!

uglytradergriddedcopy.jpg

Liam and the Baron have already statted this ship on the TAS boards...anyone else want to give it a go?

Stay within the base stats of a type A series trader- +/- 10 percent, the hull is 200 Dtons.

Assume the basic TNE approach, any tech level is possible, but should be justified io the breif - and remeber, Relic vessels arent all that common so its likely a mix of parts and techs.

ready, set, GO!

OK - here's mine. I'll cross-post this on TAS, too.

The Horizon class blockade runner. Designed around the Type A hull, it has the range of an A2 and performs at G3. It is up-armored and carries 30 tons of cargo. Primary purpose is to move in quickly to deliver supplies to an area behind enemy lines. It's equipped with various EMM and jamming packages for stealth.

Tables omitted for clarity.

OK, nice graphic and inspiring idea Bryan. Here's my quick go, T20 build but no specific numbers, just the text description based on them, so if you have to have a cost you'll have to figure it out yourself...

-------

Built on a standard type A Beowulf class Free Trader of uncertain age and lineage this ship has undergone extensive modification in its recent past.

Before that though it was briefly employed by a small polity as a simple trader, where it was given its fashionable, at least locally, green hull treatment and simple fleet number tag. The polity was optimistic and re-built a number of these ships from wrecks and other sources, restoring them to nearly new functionality through salvage.

After said polity lost most of the ships to various causes, known and unknown, they sold off the remainder at bargain prices and settled down to a simpler life.

This particular one, 718 in its previous life, is now called Circare in a return to the usual class naming convention. The crew, Captain Findan as pilot and astrogator, Parare the engineer, Soth the doctor, and Werra the gunner have over time changed the ship and added bits of prize salvage in their enterprise as treasure hunters.

Most notably is the missing passenger quarters deck, stripped off and plated over to allow adding armor layered over the hull in patches without impacting the overall volume or internal structure. Due to the nature of the application, to allow for access and other needs, only about half the hull is protected, but that level of protection is substantial when it comes into play.*

* In game terms either roll a 50/50 to apply AR10 against each attack or apply AR5 against all attacks.

The loss of the passenger staterooms is of no import to the crews' operations, in fact it's a bonus. Not only do they not have to worry about coddling potential hijackers cooped up for a week at a time in jumpspace, but the extra room in the commons has allowed two choice bits of salvage to be added. First is part of a military sickbay, one bed and instruments, which has seen some use. Treasure hunting and mining is sometimes hazardous work. Second is a full size autodoc salvaged from a medical facility. There are limited supplies of the wondrous medicines for this though so it is used only in extreme need.

Perfomance wise the ship is little changed, retaining the reliable and easy to support rebuilt (TL9) jump drive and maneuver thrusters, capable of 1G and 1 Parsec range. The powerplant has been replaced with an advanced (TL13) version of the same size salvaged from a wreck, and requiring constant maintenance.

The benefit of the higher output is enough energy to run the ship and the dual laser turret in the dorsal mount. The lasers are also salvage (TL13), and only mining lasers, which while low powered and short ranged are better than nothing.* They are also useful for cutting up wrecks or getting to buried ones, and the crew is not above a bit of mining to pay the bills should an ore body be found.

* Factor 2 USP x2 shots on single target

The dorsal turret mounts a triple sandcaster with an autoloader.*

* Factor 4 USP and 18 extra cannisters

The standard model/1 computer has been replaced with not just one model/2 but two. One is used for flight operations and the other is used for combat operations. Each can serve as a backup for the other if needed.

The original 20 lowberths are retained, with full charges ready for emergency use, or occassional rescue or passenger use.

The cargo hold has been fitted with dismountable tanks holding 24tons of fuel to allow up to 2 jumps and 8 weeks of operation for getting way out and back. And a salvaged (TL13) fuel purifier has been installed to insure the drives keep working. In addition an area of the hold has been set up as an engineering shop to maintain the ship and add value to salvage by getting it working before selling it. This leaves 55tons of cargo capacity.

Hey, no prob. I did three variants on TAS forum for this puppy--each time I looked at the thing, I saw another aspect.

http://www.traveller.comstar-games.com/viewtopic.php?t=126&start=0

Agreed-Far Trader: The Beowulf-Morraine class A-series is a good starting place, and even the Golden Age CT books state if you're gonna sport an energy weapon, ya gotta upgrade the ole PP.

IM-TNE-TU, the Wilds Siders tend not to take waking Passengers for just the rasons you state. In fact, the creds for mid-passage are now the rates for single tube LB, and old Low Passage fees means you share with three others in a ELB---if they carry 'em.

Waking Passengers/ High Passage in the Wilds? Tougher than you think--marry into the crew, or get hired.
Good description Dan! Good to see you about too ;)

I don't know jak about TNE rules, but I'll give it "basic" states.

200 ton merchant converted to Bounty Hunter
When not Bounty Hunting, smuggling and blockade running

Jump rating of 2
Maneuver rating of 4-G's with +4 agility
Turret 1 (2 pulse lasers and 1 sand caster)
Turret 2 (1 plasma gun and 1 missile rack)
Cargo of 20 tons
Vehicle bay large enough to included three sizes of vehicles
1 G-carrier / APC
Air raft / speeder
2 Grav Bikes / motorized personal craft “motorcycles” or equivalent

8 staterooms (crew and hired thugs)
2 brigs (2 reinforced staterooms)
4 tons of space for low births
Am I out of space?

By the way, I'm almost finished with a similar design that I hope to post next week.

Thank you, sir!

Hell, I whipped that out in less than 30 minutes!

It helps when you have a spreadsheet to do the math. I am using Yves Simon's FF&S spreadsheet for my calculations & it makes it a HELL of a lot easier.

Hmmm... I'll have to give this some consideration...

Nice work, Bryan, very nice, indeed!

Bryan,

That is a sweeet ride! You do good work! Any deckplan yet?
Thanks, Ran.

As to deckplans, none are in the offing by me, at least. Due to the excessive amount of grognard crap I caught on the last set I did , I resolved never again unless someone was cutting a check.

That's unfortunate.

I mean any time the friggin' rules tell you there is a 20% leeway, people should be happy for any deckplans at all!

that was my thinking, althouh experience proved otherwise. I'm don't generally like doing deckplans, I do them all by hand, and I got really sick of people raking me over the coals for idiotic shit like square counts and whatnot.

I came to the conclusion that, one, that kinda anal retentive nonsesnse wasn't nessecary for a deck plan ( in 30 years of gaming, the minis dont require infintesimal measurements to the degree demanded) and two- I was doing it simply to give something to the community.

I didn't get thanks, but I DID get an awful lot of crap, so my responce to deckplans was basically "⌧it".Two years ago, it just wasn't worth the greif for something I was doing for free.I don't mind constructive critisim, but too many people here pipe up and spew off at stuff they cannot (or will not) do them selves

The community hasn't been altogether better - although they seem more polite as rule- from what I have seen many ( not all , by no means, but vocal annoyances of outweigh the silent majority)tend to make demands, sneer at or "make it better". I'm still burned at a certain person who took one of my designs and basically posted it, saying he "made it better", supporting his own work while decrying mine. A common fan practice, granted, but one that doiesn't induce my participation in community.

Sory, I'm old. tired, and cranky...and while I enjoy participating in a community,
I get tired of fannish ego games which I do not feel the need to play.

Which, basicllay, is why i don't do deckplans!

Sorry for the long winded reply, but it seemed fair I at least be complete and state my reasons.

Sheesh... Yeah, I can't really blame you.

I've just started to get into deckplanning (at least on the smaller ships) using CC2, and I like it alright now that I know how the damn software works. But if I had some **** bitch at me because I didn't have enough squares on a floorplan, I'd probably... well, lets not get into that.

All I know is that I try to get it pretty close, which is why the leeway is there. Anyway, enough of this. Back to the stats!

Bummer, looks like I missed out, then. As a fan of your work, I would have liked to see some of your deckplans, Bryan. I guess that's just the way the Traveller community works - make up something completely fictional, and then work out the details to the Nth decimal point ...

"Liberty Picket" (T20)

A common ship built from scrounged parts during the New Era was the Type A "Liberty Picket". This was a ship built to the standard Type A plans, but included a Model/3 computer and supporting Model/3 sensor package to provide fire control for a triple missile turret (dorsal) and a triple sandcaster turret (ventral) at the cost of cargo space. Prices for these ships varied widely due to the scrounged parts which were in use in the construction.

The "Liberty Picket" was a stopgap measure used by various one and two world nations to protect their shipping before reconstruction allowed the creation of new ships. The 'Picket would be owned by an individual Captain who would have a reserve commission in the Navy and who would sign Letters of Marque and Reprisal allowing the ship to be used for privateering. The 'Picket would be deployed in a squadron with a convoy to act as part of the convoy's escort, staying to the outside to use its Model/3 sensors to their best advantage. When a threat appeared, the most common tactic was to maneuver the 'Pickets to the face the threat and hope that combined missile barrages would deter the enemy. This tactic was more effective then not since most 'Pickets had nuclear and bomb-pumped laser missiles in their magazines.

The "Liberty Picket" was usually not seen much past TL 9, being superceeded by other designs. Many were handed over to civilian usage in the later part of the New Era.

Bryan,

I feel your pain. I've reached the point now where, if someone has anything other than constructive criticism, then my reponse is. 'Don't use it.' Simple really.

You might find your plans more warmly welcomed here on CotI. My recent mapping efforts were met with nothing but constructive suggestions and praise - which was nice.
