Stateroom Ideas

Hi. I just saw this article:

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/09/creative-recycling-jumbo-hostel.php

and video:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/interactive/2008/dec/23/jumbo-hostel-stockholm-arlanda-airport

about a 747 jet converted into a hostel. Of course, I imedately thought, "Traveller!" I thought I'd share it here as inspiration for stateroom designs. On the video, at the 1:50 mark, they show small private suites on Emirate Air flights to Dubai. Here's a link to pics:

Enjoy!

I like the flying suites, too bad that's probably as close to one as I will ever get.

Wouldn't care to spend a week in jump space in one tho ;).

Not a week in jump, perhaps, but looks about right for the "small stateroom" for an in-system transport intended to be occupied for 24 hours or so.

But also gives some ideas for what might happen to those old Type S and Type A boats that finally can't break atmo anymore. See also the descriptions of "Boxtowns" in Brian Daley's Hobard Floyt & Alacrity Fitzhugh stories.

Too true. I think the Emirates suite might be right for small craft cabins, too. I do like the thoughtful use of materials, the way everything fits just so, the lighting tricks to fool the eye. The little vase of orchids fastened to the bulkhead is a quaint touch. The last picture of the man sitting reading in front of the flat screen display reminds me of Heywood Floyd in 2001. We finally have those flat screens!

edit: Look at the first pic of the flight attendant bringing the meal. Do you think she's wearing velcro slippers?

Take a look at Syd Mead's design for the interior of King Fah’d’s 747. Now that has Traveller painted all over it.

Here are also some more images for ideas.

PFVA63,

Wow! Thank you for that link!

Japan's "capsule hotels" are how I see "berthing compartments" aboard MTU's naval and large commercial ships. Among other things, the berths can provide a limited duration pressure seal to allow personnel in an emergency to wake and don suits/enter rescue balls.

The Jane Hotel in NYC, plus Yotels and Easyhotels elsewhere are similar to crew staterooms aboard MTU's small traders. You want long term employees to be satisfied over a long term, right? So you provide "funky" or "personalized" quarters, funky or personalized up to a certain limit of course.

The Pod Hotel is double occupancy quarters aboard a "subbie", lab ship, or other such vessel.

Thanks again for the link. Great pictures and plenty of inspiration!

Regards,
Bill

Hi

The capsule hotel reminds me alot of a drawing or sketch I once saw for the crew's quarters on the Kennedy class cruisers in 2300AD. I can't remember where I saw the layout, but it may not have been an official deck plan. As such I could also easily see something like that for crew quarters on a military ship (especially for rules sets that allow bunk rooms, like GT:Interstellar Wars).

My favorite of the lot though is the Jane Hotel, as it is kind of close to some ideas that I have already been kicking around (though I usually assume either 1 set of sanitary facilities per room for passengers and high ranking crew and maybe 1 set of sanitary facilities shared between two rooms for other crew.

I've also been thinking of trying to draw up some stateroom plans for some rooms using either bunkbeds or beds stacked above the other furniture, like these images below (from this furniture site - Discount Beds Belfast).

On the topic of furniture, here is one other link that I stumbled across that seemed like it might be useful for a Traveller type deck plan - Convertible Sofa/Bunk Bed
