Stay at Homes.

The title of this line immediately brought to mind a situation I found myself in a few times.

How often have you had players that couldn't be lead to travel despite your best efforts?

Okay. They served there time. Never tried to escape. Now they are old and can be expected to 'stay at home.' Bummer. That didn't work.

Several of the base types of Traveller campaign use economic inducements (ie. we're broke, the fuel tanks are empty, and there aren't any cargoes for a week; what do we do NOW?!?), and that's supposed to work most of the time. If they aren't broke then subject their ship to pirates and hand 'em a MCr repair bill...

A recent game of ours was dubbed "Gilligan's Planet" because we used the same concept to get the campaign underway. Our liner misjumped (WAAAY over ther normal distances, but that's extraneous) and the ship emerged near a habitable world with an unknown intelligent race in the southern hemisphere (most fun I've had with SimEarth in a long time, heh) but a pretty empty northern. One skittish character and a lifeboat drill later, and the characters were on the ground trying to survive while a shipload of civvies were slowly running out of time about them...

To spur on non-travellers:

Blow up their planet. ( :> )

Some random 'phone-book' killer chooses them to assasinate.

Rent the movies "Romancing the Stone", "The Freshman", "The Gods must be Crazy", "After Hours", "Into the Night", or "Adventures in Baby-sitting". All involve various events that, with dark humor, trap an average person into a larger adventure. Best if your characters are all Book One Non-military.....heh heh heh.

Kidnapped and sold into the slave trade usually gets players off planet. The way home provides a reason to travel.

They could be members of TL retarded civilization and the victims of an Imperial Uplift program or members of a minor race not accustomed to Interstellar Travel.

They could be made part of the entourage of a powerful planetary noble who is forced to capital, to make their case before the Emperor. A la Space Dogs.
