Sylean Scout knife

rancke

Absent Friend
It's the Swiss Army knife of the Far Future. But just what features does it have? How much ultra-tech goodness can you pack into something the size and shape of a pocket knife? Over and above the large blade and the small blade and the universal unsealer, I mean?

Any suggestions? Remember, it's not just about what might be useful, it's also about how much space it takes up.

A small low powered laser firestarter/signal device
I'd actually not go for powered stuff, unless it was REALLY low-power, and could be recharged either by normal movement/shaking or by solar/ambient light. Instead, I'd cram as much as I could that required NO power, but which would be useful - so perhaps I'd consider things like monomol-edged blades for cutting through tough growth, a high-index lens for concentrating sunlight to start fires, and so on - IOW, really truly update the Victorinox design to take advantage of newer, lighter, stronger materials.

The low-powered laser and other power-requiring devices would be better for the "next step up" - the 'survival belt kit'.

Didn't Famille Spofulam make one ? :D

I wouldn't trust anything with the FS logo on it unless I was specifically looking for something that I wanted to go <<boom>>. :D

Back to reality ;)

My take on the Scout Service knife was tainted early on by some article (the details of which I forget) that mentioned a secret belt buckle knife.

Something like this is what I pictured...

...though of course in place of the leaf and vine (?) motif it would be something more IISS. The Poni emblem for the X-Boat/Commo branch, and so on.

So just a handy single short blade utility type knife. Probably not really a secret but also not widely known to those outside the IISS.

For the equivalent of the Swiss Army knife MTU long had the Multi-Spanner, a handheld tool set and diagnostic unit with built in flashlight. The tool equivalent of Jack-of-all-Trades, not perfect for any job, but useful for all jobs. Also made a darn good club. Later I adopted the Leatherman style of utility tool as a poorer (and cheaper) low tech cousin.

I'm with FreeTrav in minimising powered stuff, but that depends on your definition of 'powered'. There may be some devices that, like plant seeds, are chemically powered, or maybe the knife has some form of self-charger built in, or a nano-clockwork mechanism...

I think the mechanical tools would be made of Crystaliron as a minimum, and probably Superdense. A lot depends on how things are done IYTU. If everything happens online, you'll need computer gadgets, if everything is electronic, you'll need electronic tools, etc.

I'm sure you could get a monowire reel in there, the future equivalent of a USB stick, a programmable universal tool made of a memory metal that can change the shape of its tip, saving weight and bulk, a couple of capsule grenades (hand-primable snub pistol rounds), a pair of superglue/superlube dispensers, and maybe a piezotaser.

Powered devices are more likely to be included in the Scout Comm, the far future equivalent of the mobile phone.

Neat belt-knife, FT, we don't get to see anything like that, they're illegal over here (what isn't? :() (Oh, and I 'noticed' about 7am GMT Sat). :)

I'm not too concerned with having some features that require power. Future power technology should allow quite a bit of power to be stored in a small amount of space.

hmm, isn't something powered by battery, chemically powered? I'm not up on all the right terminology.

Seam about right to me.

It should come with a little block of magnesium that you can shave off small chips to aid in firelighting. And one of thise things for removing stones from the hooves of Poni's.

Famille Spofulam Knife

Ah, here's something in the Famille Spofulam vein :oo: :D
