T5 Development Moving to the Spire

In the past few years, I've posted challenges to T5's development and some of my solutions. I've posted mechanics, general rules, house rules, setting details, designs, and so on. I've designed at least a hundred starships (88 of which are here). Heck, I wrote a starship design program so that I could rapidly design starships for T5.

I'm going to continue this all in the Moot Spire. I have two reasons for this.

Foremost, Moot memberships fund COTI. I want to support COTI, and I hope this will help do that in a small way.

Next, a lot of the material I'm working on is Not Ready For Prime Time. There are discussions I want to have, things I want to toss out and have people respond to, which may not be quite public. In other words, material that's more like playtest material. Things that may show up in print. Even spoilers. So I'd like it to be slightly less public.

This doesn't mean I'm taking everything into the Moot.

I paid for early access to T5

I paid a hell of a lot for the T5 kickstarter

I will not pay to access material behind a paywall, it just means my interest in the future of the game drops

nor will I be able to contribute

why not re-open the T5 private access forum that was for playtest discussion - that was closed despite people having paid for it.

Excuse me. I seem to recall that you were the one suggesting that some of my discussions be behind the Moot. Does this no longer make sense to you?

I'm not sure that I would call the Moot Spire a paywall. Participating in funding these forums is all it takes to get Moot membership. While that is a cost, you are not just paying to access the Moot.

That is like saying that contributing to NPR is a paywall.

Not quite - I suggested some of the inner circle stuff shouldn't be discussed openly, since all it does is tease us plebs.

I have learned more from a podcast and a series of youtube interviews about Marc's vision for Traveller than I have from the open discussion of these forums.

I paid for T5 playtest access so T5 should be discussed there until it is finished.

I have no idea what an NPR is.

As it stands anything discussed in the moot is something I can not participate in - if I want access I have to pay, that is the definition of a paywall.

The daft thing is I would contribute to a patreon set up to support the forums - but I will not pay to access something I have already paid over $1000 for.

There is a closed forum for T5 playtest - that is where T5 should be discussed 'secretly' until it is ready to be made public.

NPR is America's National Public Radio, a non-profit news and entertainment source. Like many non-profit radio stations, it relies on member support and charitable donations to keep functioning.

I can see it would rankle some to have to pay for a Moot subscription on top of originally supporting the initial T5 release. But as a member of the Moot, I feel the subscription is worth more than access to something that is "like {T5} playtest material."

Having said that, I personally am not too interested in spending any more money on T5. Although some of it is quite interesting and inspiring, I can't play it at my table. But I'll be keeping an eye on its continued development, whether in the Moot or not.

Ah, it's my fault for misleading you with the title... although you are absolutely right that Handbook discussion should be in the T5 Playtest area.

For their videos, it is. I can't watch PBS broadcast - no reception, and without a paid membership, I cannot watch current PBS shows.

The moot is a paywall - you cannot read nor participate unless you pay. No pay, no play. (Staff get in free, but earn it in other ways.)

The Playtest forums are also a paywall - if you didn't participate in the kickstarter nor buy the preview disk, you don't have access. And currently, that's in read-only mode.

Since T5 is still on the .09 version after nearly 5 years and the Player's Handbook (which should have been simply a cut and paste for the most part from the core book) is still no where in site I refuse to give any more money to Marc or his endeavors.

I had high hopes as well. But I am done. I do not know all the trials tha Marc is going through. But I am very close to giving up. I will still keep an eye on it but I am liking the Cepheus engine and all the supplements.

Robject,

As I can't preview the Moot, can you give me an idea of what's been posted for T5 since the start of this thread and what's planned for the near/mid future please?

Thanks!

Hello Hiro,

Most of the current discussions on T5 will remain on the public forums of COTI.

The main exception: if you backed the original T5 kickstarter, or if you are a Moot member, you can have access to "my version zero" of the T5 Player's Handbook, which I am posting for constructive criticism.

Thanks for the reply.

When I’m back at a computer I’ll search for what’s public on the Player’s Handbook. Are you able to tell me what makes it “my version zero” please?

Tim

Hi Tim.

Yes: it's unauthorized, and it's incomplete. That's what makes it "my" + "version zero".

Here's what it does have, at least to some degree:

* format: 6x9
* (~68 pages) Chargen (several careers) & Aliens
* (~35 pages) Tasks, Interpersonals, Combat
* (~50 pages) Weapons, Armor, Vehicles, Starships
