TCS exchange rate table vs Striker exchange rate table

Matt123

SOC-14 1K
These two tables, both doing the same job, have completely differant ratios between planets.

Striker bk2, pg39 and TCS pg32.

For example a TL9 class B starport (Inthe SM2412) selling a 1,000Cr fridge to a TL8 class D starport (Treece SM2311) has;
under Striker .65/.5 =1.3 exchange rate, the fridge costs 1,300Cr
under TCS .35/.15 = 2.333 exchange rate, the fridge costs 2,333Cr

If someone recalls this being discussed before, please point me in the right direction. Otherwise am I using these tables wrong?

Cheers

I'd heard about the discrepancy, but I don't recall seeing it discussed anywhere.

Since both Striker and TCS have been decanonized, maybe someone should make a consolidated version and submit it to Moongoose. Bonus points if it can somehow be made more or less compatible with GURPS:Traveller.

Or maybe Don or Rob could persuade MM to declare one of the two correct and the other wrong, wrong, wrong?

Hmmm, been a while since I came up with a "new" question!

Since both Striker and TCS have been decanonized...

I wasn't aware they had been cast out, when did that happen?

Making up a new table wouldn't be an easy task, there are a lot of influences on RL exchange rates. Condensing these down to a two dimensional chart feels somewhat inadequate. Ironic since I have always been happy grabbing whichever chart was at hand previously.

If I had to pick a limited number of known factors, in order it would be TL representing relative economic efficiency, population as a stand in for GDP and Starport as an indicator of volume of interstellar trade.

I breifly considered parsecs reflecting demand for a foriegn governments currency reducing as distance increases, but the simple mechanic of making the Imperial Credit the only transferable currancy between the stars will resolve distance issues. In effect local currancy is exchanged at the downport for Imperial Credits which are electronically transfered to the next system and turned into local credits there. Assuming the Imperial Credits holds a constant value throughout the Imperium, it can travel any distance.

Amber and Red Zones, like Starports should also have thier exchange rates influenced as their status will impact severly on interstellar trade.

Obviously as stand ins these are rough & ready and I'm ignoring interest rates, inflation, relative GDP growth, trade imbalances, economic cycles, etc.

Say TL & Population to create the chart, modified along one axis or the other by Starport type around class C. And modified a step further downward by Amber or Red Zone status.

For example;

Exchange Rate Table
Tech_________Population
Level________A__9__8__7__6__5__4__3__2__1
K________1.08 1.06 1.04 1.02 1.00 .98 .96 .94 .92 .90
J________1.04 1.02 1.00 .98 .96 .94 .92 .90 .88 .86
H________1.00 .98 .96 .94 .92 .90 .88 .86 .84 .82
G_________.96 .94 .92 .90 .88 .86 .84 .82 .80 .78
F_________.92 .90 .88 .86 .84 .82 .80 .78 .76 .74
E_________.88 .86 .84 .82 .80 .78 .76 .74 .72 .70
D_________.84 .82 .80 .78 .76 .74 .72 .70 .68 .66
C_________.80 .78 .76 .74 .72 .70 .68 .66 .64 .62
B_________.76 .74 .72 .70 .68 .66 .64 .62 .60 .58
A_________.72 .70 .68 .66 .64 .62 .60 .58 .56 .54
9_________.68 .66 .64 .62 .60 .58 .56 .54 .52 .50
8_________.64 .62 .60 .58 .56 .54 .52 .50 .48 .46
7_________.60 .58 .56 .54 .52 .50 .48 .46 .44 .42
6_________.56 .54 .52 .50 .48 .46 .44 .42 .40 .38
5_________.52 .50 .48 .46 .44 .42 .40 .38 .36 .34
4_________.44 .42 .40 .38 .36 .34 .32 .30 .28 .26
3_________.36 .34 .32 .30 .28 .26 .24 .22 .20 .18
2_________.28 .26 .24 .22 .20 .18 .16 .14 .12 .10
1_________.20 .18 .16 .14 .12 .10 .08 .06 .04 .02
0_________.12 .10 .08 .06 .04 .02 .00 .00 .00 .00

Modifiy TL cumulatively by (minimum TL0);
Starport type A +2, B +1, D -1, E -2, X-4
Rich World +2, Industrial World +1, Non-Agricultural World -1, Poor World -2
Amber Zone -2, Red Zone -4

For example an Agricultural TL9 pop 7 class B starport (Inthe SM2412) selling a 1,000Cr fridge to a Poor, Non-Agricultural World with TL8 pop 8 class D starport (Treece SM2311) results in;
TL9 raised one level by Starport B to TL10 or .66 vs. TL8 lowered one level by Starport D and three more levels by being Non-Agricultural and Poor to TL4 or .40
.66/.4 * 1000Cr = 1,650Cr cost to Treece for the fridge.

Dunno, maybe a starting point?

Cheers

For what its worth, I have been in email contact with Marc & Don (just bought a bunch of FF cd's as a christmas treat :) ). They were surprised that TCS & Striker wouldn't be considered canon.

Don mentioned "Perhaps they should not be regarded as the definitive word for generating things like economic spreadsheets for the whole Imperium..." which is pretty well established. Take a shoe & stretch it, eventually it breaks.

On the question of an acceptable exchange rate table, I seem to have been met with universal silence both here & ct-starships! lol. Obviously I'm the only one with an interest, not the first time!

Cheers!

actually, I'm interested in an off-shoot kind of way. On the one hand, a standard price simplifies things so we aren't playing the accountants in space, on the other hand, it does seem contrary to anything approaching reality.

I'll have to look back at Striker - all I ever did with it was design vehicles and merge part of it's combat system into CT combat (I liked the idea of armor & penetration, although after reading Supplement Four's occasionally over-zealous praise of CT's original combat system, I do see the original purpose of combining everything into a single roll). I only vaguely recall that table.

Anyway - any new tables/revisions would be interesting to look over.

... Kinda been looking into a CT Pocket Empires.

What got me started (this time...) was an exchange on CT-starships list on Paya (Spinward Marches 2509) and an examination of the J1 cluster it sits in. Paya TL9, has the only class A starport and is limited (using TCS calcs & rounding up...) to a 100tn shipyard.

Grey matter starts stirring & I recall reading somewhere that ships can be constructed on any planet, to a limited degree (which I take to mean no class discounts & architect fees are charged with every ship built). So now I'm wondering how economic it is to build vs purchase a TL9 100tn ship within this cluster.

A bit of a wandering journey, paused for a moment here, pondering on exchange rates.

Page 6 of Issue 4 of JTAS might be a more "definitive" answer regarding the effects of the Exchange Rate table. Since this is JTAS, and hasn't be "decanonized", you may want to consult that table instead of either of the two - or, you might even compare the tables from JTAS with either of Striker and/or TCS and see which model is most comparable with that in JTAS.

Just a thought ;)
