USAF C-17 landed at a small commerical airport just a couple of miles for it's Air Force Base in Florida. Stopped just 10 feet from end of runway.

Watching the plane take off, made me think of Traveller traders landing and leaving small downports.

More of an interest story that I thought I would share than an topic of great interest.

That's pretty impressive piloting. However, I doubt that impressive performance saved the pilot from a royal tongue-lashing when he got back to base.

Especially since unconfirmed reports are that there was a USMC General aboard! The aircraft was arriving from Southwest Asia carrying 23 passengers.

The take-off was done by a different crew... the original crew having already been removed to the doghouse.

The small airport runway is almost exactly in line with the air base runway he was trying to land at... just about 4-5 miles earlier.

His nav computer would be telling him he was on course, on centerline of the runway... he looked ahead and saw a runway, and began his let-down. By the time he realized "Hey, this is the wrong place", he was probably too slow to safely apply power and climb.
