The Classic Ships - Variants

Mithras

SOC-14 1K
I'm creating a small ship universe, and I want to use what I've got, the classic designs as the mainstay of my universe, with extras culled from the great internet or my own designs.

To maximise the potential of the classic Book 2 and Supplement 7 designs I'm looking at mapping out all of the official and the unofficial varients. I like to see starships as aircraft really, rather than maritime vessels, and I can use aviation terminology to chart these designations.

So the Type R Subsidized Merchant runs like this. Designation, Aerodyne Challenger R-3 (manufacturer for MTU, name of type likely based on a famous example or actual CT class name, and HG designation with series number, in order that it was listed in CT or S7).

R-3A Book 2 design, uneconomical, used by governments to supply colonies
R-3B Smaller engines more cargo space, a viable speculator, revised upper deck layout
R-3C Uprated D engines, less cargo space, a military variant, Gyro Cadiz type
R-3D As R-3B but launch replaced with external cargo pod for more economic viability
LR-3A Research variant ie. Shaarin Challenger
TR-3C Military tanker variant, with demountable tanks
AR-3C Armed and armoured military variant used to drop RORO vehicles in assault missions.
R-3E Stretched 500 ton, by Ken Pick
R-3F Stretched 600 ton by Ken Pick
R-3G R-3F with jump 2, 2G drives
HR-3C Medical response variant, passengers are medical team, lower deck divded into surgery, ward lab, and intensive care

The Volturnus gas-giant flyer makes a great manufacturers variant for the Type A Free Trader, the Nortinghouse A-2. The X-Boat Tender also has a couple of variants listed.

So, can you recommend any neat variations on the classics, or point me to any? Deckplans are great but not required!

Official S variants: The sulieman (in Sup 7), the Serpent Aerodyne S2, and a class of Type S with much different internals in T20. Also, another variant deckplan is in Snapshot.

Type A: several deckplans exist in canon; Sup 7 and Snapshot have different ones, and at least one other exists in canon. All have same performance.

Type R: Sup 7, TTA, and at least one other deckplan exist. All three show airframes.

Plus plans for all included designs exist in MGT... adding another "canon, but is it OTU?" to S, R, A, A2, and T.

There was an interim variant of the Type S that was introduced in the early days of the dead-tree JTAS in the article that was an early draft of what became B6:Scouts. The vessel, mentioned in passing, was a "pure courier" configuration of the Type S that removed two of the staterooms, the air/raft, and the 3dton cargo hold to make room for a total of 55dtons integral, internal fuel tankage. The obvious PC-centric hack was to then convert some of that tankage back into hold or other fitting space, and I have always presumed this thinking led to the eventual introduction of the Type J in S7 to serve as the default template for a repurposed, "used" Type S.

But IYTU, there might still be an IISS-commissioned TypeS(C) or two out there somewhere in special duty. IMTU, I gut 15dtons of the 55dtons of tankage and call the resulting mass-market thing the Type U Utility Starship -- it is basically a Type J configured without the odd-shaped, ore-specific bays and minus all the mentioned aftermarket customization.

Other interstellar polities that do not have the Xboat network rely upon various 200dton "Couriers" with J-3 capabilities, and the assorted CT Alien Modules carry the details of race-specific variants (the variations are mostly in regards to computer Model, M-drive size, crew accommodations, hardpoints, and carried craft) of this very-useful-in-a-variety-of-other-roles vessel. If you push, for example, a further variant of the Solomani variant (Type SC) can fit an entire Cutter Module aboard for kicks... such multi-role vessels appear IMTU in a variety of missions: government, corporate, and private...

Hmm, unaware of any previously published variants BUT if you want to be complete in a small ship universe there should be Q-ship (anti-pirate ships run by navies that appear like harmless merchants until the pirates get close) and CVE (escort carrier, merchants converted to carry a few fighters - may not even be able to recover them or maintain them but can carry them) variants. Not aircraft types but ship types.

The non-recovery was a problem with the WWII MAC ship - it had a catapult but no landing deck. Recovery shouldn't be a problem for the space CVE/MAC - match velocities and re-dock.

Mithras,

The MT folio adventure Assignment: Vigilante has a "pocket carrier" version of the Stellar-class passenger liner.
