The Hyidis

Hey, I was just fiddling around with this idea for a bit of an odd minor race, so I figured I'd get your opinion on it.

Hyidis.

The Hyidis or Gas Giantesses as they are sometime known, are a massive minor race. By human terms, The Hyidis resemble huge fat women, anywhere between 7 to 9 feet tall and weighing 700 to 1000 pounds, growing larger as they age. They have 4 long tentacles grown out of their head and another four larger flatter tentacles growing from out of their backs. A Hyidis will use these for simple tasks, such as holding objects and feeding herself. Their skin is hairless and is either blue, yellow, orange or white, often a mix of these in a wave patten much like a gas giant planet.

However, the Hyidis' oddest feature is their ability to inflate themselves. The Hyidis' skin, muscles and even certain bones have tough yet stretchable lung-like cells in them, filled with a densely thick fluid, which the Hyidis is able to harden, giving her abnormal strength and toughness. However a Hyidis can also convert this fluid into a incredibly light gas, allowing her inflate herself to twice her size and become weightless. This allows the Hyidis to fly, using her back tentacles to move herself trough the air.

The Hyidis come from the moons of the Gas Giant, Hy, which, according to Hyidis legend was the first of their kind and is worshiped like a goddess. They're an all female race, each Hyidis become automatically pregnant around the age of 40 to 50 yeas old. This plays an important part as when becomes a mother, she becomes a Hygina, part of the ruling class of Hy, as it's believed that only after becoming a mother has a Hyidis become grown enough, both physically and mentally, to handle the responsibly of being able to change the fate of Her planet.

Raising in the social standing of Hygina is a mix of charisma, experience, cunning and, some would say, being the biggest. Size matters on Hy, as the Hyidis link it with wisdom, experience, strength, beauty and favor with the Goddess Hy. When a Hyidis demands something, she'll often inflate herself to her to maximum size in order to tower over her opponent and most stalemates between two Hyidis are often ended by finding out who's the biggest.

Hyidis are Large (3d6 Strength and Endurance, 1d6 Dex,) have slow metabolism and are able to inflate themselves to fly (Float, 10 meters per round, count as being huge when inflated, giving attacks against them +1 DM to hit.)

Armor Options:

Stretchi: The Hyidis have been using this strange rubber-like cloth since the beginning of time. Made from the plant life from Hy's moon, clothes made from Stretchi are able stretch to twice their size, making them invaluable to any Hyidis who needs to inflate herself at a moments notice. It can be used on any armor but Battle Dresses. (Cr 50.)

Interesting. And...

Welcome aboard killer-custard :D

A couple problems though. Simple air inflation won't provide buoyancy in a normal atmosphere. To get positive lift their inflation will have to be with a gas lighter than the surrounding atmosphere. Considerably so to offset their own weight. So they'll also have to be extremely light (i.e. fragile or at least not terrible muscular) so I'd say you'll have to rate their strength much lower. 1D6 at the most. Probably more like simply making it Str 2. Their End should even be lower as well, no more than the normal 2D6, probably less.

Now just what the buoyant gas is will be another set of problems. It will almost certainly have permeability issues (leaking out of the sacs), possibly be toxic (if not to the Hyidis then to others), or at the least offensive if not dangerous. And you have to come up with a method of production or harvest of it.

Don't chuck the idea, but refine it some.

Funny idea... I do have one gripe though: these Hydis do, in no way, behave anything like humans. Yet, they look humanoid.

Of course, they could be the result of an outlandish experiment by some Ancient or other- but as it stands I don't think I would use a race like this in anything but a silly campaign ;)

Or I wóuld use it, just not describe them as "humanoid" but as... I don't know, "something vaguely resembling a huge fat woman"

Well I never meant them to be too serious but I like the idea of the ancients. Might use that.

However I'll rewritten Hyidis inflation ability. See what you think.

Are they living on a gas giant? If so do they float. Similar to the floaters from Cosmos. I also thing they have a way of extracting oxygen to breathe and storing hydrogen to float through their natural metabolic processes. Psionics is too much of a handwave for me. Some floating races there are floaters in Jem by Fredrik Pohl and they extract hydrogen. (although they resemble floating bloated tics) How close is the resemblance to humanoid women is it more like Manatees being mistaken for mermaids.

They don't live on the gas giant, but rather on her moons. As for looking like humanoid woman, they are very similar to humans in appearance, skin colour, tentacles and overall hugeness aside.
