The Irklan.
I don't know how many people have run Irklan, or even heard of them - they were, back in CT days, the Regina Subsector's answer to ninja:
The Irklan
"Religious sect of humaniti based in the desert highlands of Menorb/Regina (Spinward Marches 1803). The sect is of special interest because of its high stress on personal survival and individual prowess in hand-to-hand combat.
"The ascetic subculture of the Irklan is a rigorous training ground for body and mind. Members enjoy an awesome reputation throughout the subsector (and beyond) as masters of stealth, unarmed combat, and rigorous control of their bodies and their minds.
"The origins of the sect are obscure. It is believed that the sect dates back to the earliest days of the Menorb colony, several hundred years ago. Wrong-doers were exiled into the upland deserts. Few survived, but those that did seem to have formed the nucleus of the Irklan. Forced to make do without the benefits of technology, the sect has developed a dislike for such, believing that too much technology makes one soft and incapable."
So, now that Psion has emerged, it could be time to redraw the Irklan as a Psion Mystic Order, teaching but three Psionic Talents: Awareness, and the Advanced Talents of Aura Perception and Personal Enhancement.
What do you think? As they are the descendants of criminals, they can easily be the bad guys, an "evil" Mystical Order promoting psionic power for selfish ends while a "good" Mystical Order emerges elsewhere, teaching the heretical philosophy that all sophonts must learn tolerance of one another and to work for the greater good. Probably still eschewing technology, but working for the good of society rather than for personal gain.
Something like that, anyway. Plenty of possibilities for Psion Patrons and player problems.
