The Mandalorian

Over on Disney+ there's a new show called The Mandalorian. It's definitely a Star Wars story... but as far from Jedi, Sith, space battles, and grand political maneuverings as you could get. Its story style is heavily influenced by old westerns and samurai movies.

I just watched the 4th episode - one drops every week, for an 8 episode 1st season - and there are a lot of elements to the show lovers of Traveller would recognize: mix of tech on worlds, how economics shapes lives, gritty scifi, and so on.

And yea, Disney+ is yet another streaming channel, yet another monthly subscription and I imagine that'll be a deal breaker for a lot of people. I'm not trying to talk anyone into watching the show, just raising the visibility of something Traveller-ish I really enjoy.

I have also seen the show, and would recommend it for anyone looking for Traveller inspiration.

I'm glad to hear the show is good. I liked Pedro Pascal in GoT and Narcos. I hope they make it available to rent at some point in time, though since there's no way I'm subscribing to Disney's streaming service.

Different creative team from the movies, Favreau being an alumni from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Filoni a disciple of Lucas, combining success with canon.

Disney+ being yet another streaming service is the big deal breaker for me. Already paying for two that I do watch regularly.

Consider cycling through services that you use, have a regular and bingewatch the other then move onto another.

Armor value and degradation is a subtheme. A properly armored Mandalorian is not exactly a subtle hide in the shadows thing, but they don't really do sneak much anyway.

They probably mined this site and game for ideas. Disney helped my family ages ago, and then there were hints for a rekindled job opportunity, but there were issues that makes me not want to touch anything Disney now with a ten foot light saber. They should have stuck with MM and DD toons.

I'm sorry an official Traveller movie never happened to give these people a run for their money.

Kind of like the A-Team. It's been done before.

If I watch an hour of TV a month, that is a lot for me. The thought of paying to watch one show every two weeks does not fly at all. I do not even have cable, and I need to get the antenna worked on to get back a couple of channels. I will have to see how that fits into the budget.

I can't remember the last time I watched regular TV. For me it's now strictly online streaming. Amazon and YouTube are your friends, with maybe Vimeo or Crackle or some other good quality venue as an alternative. And other than Amazon, I simply refuse to pay for TV. I got rid of cable in the 90s, and have not looked back since. The local cable company actually had a sales person (lady) come knocking on my door trying to get me hooked up and suck more money out of me. "Sorry, it was for the guy who was renting the downstairs bedroom, and he's gone. So..." *slam door in her face...well, not really, but you know* :)

To me Star Wars is Luke blowing up the Death Star to Lando and Wedge doing the same thing in Jedi. And that's it.

I just watched the first episode last night. It’s great fun, in the way Rogue 1 was for me - new yet comfortably familiar at the same time. Gravitas and grit with some Disney cuteness sprinkled around. Very well done and quite beautiful.

I also rarely watch television/streaming so I’m not sure I’ll be subscribing just for this but I do think this is a great show. The inside look at the bounty hunter culture alone is great grist for the Traveller mill.

Well, that's what kilemall is suggesting. You subscribe for a month ($10 or whatever it is), and then use that month to watch the 8 episodes. Wait for the "season" to end, then "binge" watch them within that first month (all 8 in a day, 1 a day, 2 a week, whatever).

The game is to make sure that you UN-subscribe when you're done.

It's annoying, to be sure.

But if you used to drop $10 on a movie, or rent movies, or pay for content in other mediums, "why not" drop $10 on 8(ish) hours of content.

Despite the ease of subscribing and un-subscribing, it's still a pain to juggle services for specific shows.

I won't do it myself, because I'm lazy and forget to unsub, I also hate having to come up with passwords and deal with registrations.

I pay, at most, $7.25 as a senior to see a movie. Normally, I see it with my wife, although I did see "Midway" with a buddy of mine, as neither one of our wives was interested in seeing that one. When I say I do not have cable, I mean that. I do not have any form of cable connection, and I am certainly not going to tie up my Internet to live stream a TV show which I would have to pay for.

If it is that good a show, they eventually will put it out in CD to watch, and then I will see about borrowing it from someone..

If it were about pre-RotJ and pre-Prequel Boba Fett told in a gritty manner, perhaps.
Anything Di$ney touches turns to merde.

Hmm, not really, the Disney SW cartoon Rebels is really quite good, handles everybody very nicely including many of the original movie characters and some prequel and novel-only. Very reverent and in-universe and more mysteries of the central planet to the series' plot.

If they had handed off the new movies to that crew, well it would have been fantastic.

It's a deal breaker for me too, in that I refuse to pay for any.

A friend of mine who has Disney+ let me watch a bit of it, and I enjoyed what I saw. Eventually I'll get the DVD set.

I just watched the new star wars, episode 9. Im done now. I have laid it to rest. I never want to see another star wars sow ever.
