Thoughts on The Look

I be thinking you could do good things by making army stuff look like Gulf War II in space.

Something like

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul_gylyan.boielle/2300.jpg

only, er, Good.

Something about the way they stand, the clothes they wear just make them so cool.

I'd do the spaceships like the subs are don in a book I've got called Modern Submarine Warfare (Miller/Jordan, Salamander 91?) where each sub detailed gets a three quaters shot with a selection of its ordiance next to it.

Only you'd have to copy the style of picture closely for it to work, and, like, if you didn't think those pictures were the bees knees in your youff you might not appreciate it.

-----------

Otherwise, and important question to be addressed is

What Does Everyday Clothing Look Like.

This is not an official image of anything, just a doodle of mine.

uh

wow.
2 plz.

in all seriousness.
I still love the look and feel of the Colonial Marines from Aliens. I do think that there are a number of technological improvements that can be added to their arsenal. but its a fun, romantic, high-tech yet rugged look at how wars could be fought in the future.

Ooooooh yeah! If someone could make miniatures that looked that cool! (Even for a doodle.)

***Something like this?:***

Why Yes!

Only you only want a couple of torpedoes, and ideally a selection of types (long range ship killers, short range interceptors, sensor drones etc.) and they should be closer to the tubes.

and then run the picture though a filter to make it look like a painting.

That doodle looks to be a very well done 3/4 view of a decent-looking 2300-esque ship.

One thing about it immediately "Nags" at me... why does the central spar appear to be strealined with, in fact, a non-aft "Down" oriented cockpit., when the rotational arms' pods do not?

Not that I'm nitpicking, or anything...

Check out the cover of the Star Cruiser boxed set, or even the illustration of the Kennedy in the Diretor's Guide. That's the kind of bridge/cockpit it had. And this doodle has the official title of "Kennedy-class Fast Missile Cruiser, Block II Revision."

Hey, I got one of those!

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul_gylyan.boielle/kennedy4.jpg

Back end painted bee colours, in an attempt to evoke US naval aeroplanes before they went all grey.

Thats not streamlining, thats an ideal reduced RCS shape when the craft is stuttering!

The maths is very complex, but I assure you it works.

:)

Incidentally, I have decided that my doodle looks better with a longer sting:-

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul_gylyan.boielle/kennedy3.jpg

Obviously, this long tail results from the ship using an all new linear accelerator to smash the !"£%$MG in to the &^%$£$£ core.

A is a view of the main machinery of the ship.

B is some kinda space fighter.

I think space fighters look good in invasion stripes, and think that the units fighting the Kafers should adopt them, mostly as a morale boosting thing.

While it looks nifty, I think it's starting to look more like something out of Core Command than 2300AD... or are we sacrificing the Bab5 Earth cruiser look?

You know me Doc, Got a thing for curves.

Plus everything I draw recently has a nasty tendency to look like those yellow N-1's from Star Wars TNE.

Although I'd like to think I'm just going through an Art Deco period.

Must be admitted that I just recently aquired a copy of Mr. Pulvers most enjoyble Centauri Knights, and am currently thinking that all scifi roleplaying should be at least that much fun.

And have similar Powered Armour.

And indeed how one could drop Centauri Knights in to 2300 with very little modification.

And Blue Planet.

And I've been reading this book called Gunboat! a celebration of the ability of British small craft commanders to be agressive and dashing and independent even after the heady days of 100-1 kill ratios against the French and Spanish.

And how this is similar to the Frigate commanders of Aubery/Maturin fame, and how cool it is to be able to go around breaking up pirate and slaving rings, or demonstrating displeasure with locals by blowing shit up.

Very not Star Trek.

And how this would work well in 2300, if only there was an appropriate Straw Man to shoot up.

More Aliens with a tendency to be difficult.

Although I guess you could play a dashing French Cruiser commander sweeping up the odd German ship out on the far side of the Galaxy, but like, yeah.

one idea I had for a small star ship campaign was a privateer like ship patrolling in to the (I'm forgetting the name now) finger/hand/arm of space right off to the left of Eta-Bootis. finding the odd kafer ship or observation post thats gone a bit rouge and such.

Being a good pirate always intrigued me ;)

Ah, Centauri Knights... Now there is THS done right. And yes, that look and feel with only the addition of stutter warp is real close to just about as close to 2300 without using any of the TV cliches (and as someone who never really cared for B5, I include it in the cliches. It did some details right and what's his name does have a flair for good dialog, but the story is serious old hat and even Shatner's acting would have been right at home... but I digress)

CK is quite possibly the single best hard SF rpg supplement on the market right now, IMHO and all that. I've even written Mr. Pulver a fanboy email begging for a sequel...
