CT Only: Thrown Blades

I am relatively new to Traveller, and have been going through the combat rules in TTB pretty carefully. One thing that strikes me as odd are the rules for thrown blades:

Daggers, blades, and bayonets may be
thrown at a target at short range. Throw 18+ to hit; DM
+dexterity, +blade skill, -target evasion DM if evading. If a
hit is achieved, the wound is 2D.

There is no mention of Armor adjustments. Does this mean that a blade thrower has the same chance to hit someone with no armor as he or she does to hit someone in Combat Armor?

I tried searching this forum for any viewpoints on this, but couldn't find anything. Is this something that's very common in actual campaigns?

I can't say that it happens very often, but it does happen. I recommend using the armor modifiers given for the specific type of blade being thrown; and extend that to the pole arms as well. So a 1H sword would be a -3 DM vs Cloth armor, while a (2H) broadsword would be a 0 DM, if for some reason a PC decides to chuck his sword at an NPC.

And remember, don't get hung up on the rules, just try to be consistent while doing what's fun.

Game on!

What Bob said, plus don't be afraid to add in situational modifiers as you see fit. A knife slipped into the ribs of someone who wasn't expecting it will do a lot more damage than a slash landed on a person attempting to evade it. A bayonet thrust full-on into a target will likely do more damage than a sword swipe at someone running away (though again that's very situational).

Ref fearlessly!

That's a really good question, one I've never come across in all my years of CT gaming.

I've never once used that rule--never had anyone throw anything. They always used their guns.

But a well-designed ceramic-composite throwing knife can bypass security detectors, and still kill from a (small) distance - and without making a noisy fuss.

While I haven't actually seen someone throw one in as Traveller game, I have seen characters carry them.

Never threw a knife, but I had a marine who always carried a ceramic composite combat knife. Only used once, reversed and used the hilt to knock another PC unconscious. They were hallucinating due to some toxin, and were going to hurt themselves.

Such fun.

Being a knife-thrower IRL I was very unhappy about that mini-ruleset in the book. I've engineered something far simpler that works for me. :)
