TNE:1248 preview/summary thread?

Some folks I've been talking to on other lists are (quite justifiably, I think) rather reticent to invest in the money for access to the TNE:1248 playtest files without having some sort of glimpse into what's in them.

While I doubt a PDF preview would be a viable option, I was going to point them to the thread that I could have sworn was on here a while ago where somebody compiled all of MJD's random comments and teasers and quotes. But that seems to have disappeared (in fact, all the old pre-November threads have gone from here).

Is that thread hidden somewhere, or lost forever? I'm sure there used to be older threads around...

Do you mean this thread?

They are all still there. You have to change your history days setting. Go to any forum topic overview and you should see a prompt for how far back you want to go. Just change this and hey presto.
Hope this helps.

</font>[/QUOTE]Ah. That did the trick. Thanks! Though that thread seemed to have less on it than I thought. Is there a collection of all the 'quotes' from people in the TNE Universe?

Whoa! I thought that we are going to get a PDF preview with a buy-in plan when the deadtree version comes out???

Have I missed out on what I was hoping to be my Christmas present? I would very much like to be part of any playtest group for 1248...

Details of the playtest are here - http://www.travellerrpg.com/cgi-bin/Trav/CotI/playtest.pl

A thread discussing it is here - http://www.travellerrpg.com/cgi-bin/Trav/CotI/Discuss/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=000165;p=1

Basically you pre-order the printed version of the book and gain access to the playtest forum and files. If the book isn't printed you will be refunded what you paid less $10, which covers the final PDF version of the book.

- Neil.

Right now all there's only the PDFs that are available in the playtest (which you have to pay to access, but you do get the final PDF and hardcopy at the end of it) - there are no other 'previews' available, which is what some people are complaining about. They don't want to fork out that much money (especially considering the postage costs outside the US) without having any clue what they're getting into, which is a fair enough objection I think.

Well, uh, while I can see a limited point to the complaint, I think that if they read all that big long compilation post, and they are still not interested in seeing what's going on, then these are the kind of people who are only going to buy the book once it hits the shelves and they've had a chance to read half of it in the store.

There is still enough to do that it's not really possible to throw together a true sample PDF. Either take a leap of faith and reward Martin for trying, or shut the frog up. Really, these are people who spend thousands of dollars on sourcebooks for D&D and Evercrack and probably already have Traveller collections I would envy... and they're complaining about spending a couple bucks to not just see what's FINALLY happening to the story, but also the opportunity to SHAPE it?

Take your whineyness somewhere else. Only mature minds need apply. Either put up or shut up. (This is obviously not directed at those who are simply reporting or commenting on the matter, it is directed squarely at the hypocritical whiners. I certainly don't want the PT forum to be dominated by bellyachers. I'M bad enough.

Well, considering that QLI are asking for quite a bit of money upfront (including a very scary postage charge), I think people are perfectly entitled to say 'Hey, what are we actually getting for this?'. This way of ordering/paying for a book isn't exactly the norm in this industry too.

That`s what`s making the proposal interesting. The customer is helping to get the book published as early as possible, and as good as possible.

In all honesty, while I didn`t subscribe (due to the unearthly postage fees to Europe, how expensive can it be to ship printed matter? I send stuff oversees for less than half what QLI is asking.), I still think it is an interesting concept. The publishing industry (just like the Music and Movie industries as well) needs to find new ways to promote, market and finance their product, that QLI is boldly going where no publisher has gone before. It may seem strange, but maybe it`ll work and become a new standard of publishing.

I would say pay to get into print is not a new concept - In the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries publishing for books that did not an immediately massive market to recoup costs were always done by advanced subscription. Its just that the web makes the whole thing more widely available.

What is wrong with asking those who want to see a project to stump up the price of publication to fund it? People who intimate 'but I have roasted people on the TML for years, telling them how good my ideas are and how crap their ideas are, I deserve more' should take an evening class in economics 101.

Now, that is not to say that I don't see people's legitimate gripes - such as no pay, no input through this board - I hope that is not the case as the LEW led debate on Virus (on the Terran/Solomani board!) has informed us all.

I'm not sure how much someone without access to the files can contribute, but I'm certainly willing to listen to anyone with comments on TNE, whether they oare on thje playtest or not.

Some people do tend to disqualify themselves by hteir attitide though..
