When it comes to names, I tend to look through some of my science fiction collection, along with my history collection, and also the old-fashioned phone book. Then again, I lean toward Solomani backgrounds. I go with names that can be pronounced readily by all concerned.
Gorak of the Far Seer clan just doesn't fly well with me!![]()
Name generation/collection has been a sideline of mine but I don't have a computer generation process, it's more manual involving lots of 3 x 5 cards. I'm in the process of developing some 2d6 tables sourcing from my manual process currently.
What kind of name do you need/want?
I read this as Gorak of the Far Trader "Seer", and imagined a Vegan engineer, trying to keep an old ship in the sky.Gorak of the Far Seer clan just doesn't fly well with me!![]()

[/QUOTE]JBE0401 "D66 Compendium," pp. 35-46 has a selection of 2d6 tables for "Character/NPC Names."
The "Vilani" personal and family name tables have.... issues, but otherwise the Humaniti name tables seem fine (I haven't really looked at the Zhodani tables yet).
I've got a handful of similar tables that are functional (if limited) that I'll post a link to once I put them up on my web log.
Mainly a quick and dirty method for naming NPC's, as most players will give their pc's names like Bob or Nancy. Especially the non-CT players.

For "generic" humans of the Third Imperium, I frequently scramble Terran ethnicities and Vilani together. This can be simply spelling; recall that the first Vilani name we were given years ago was Henry but spelled their way. Spelling exactly as we do it now is not vital, since the Long Night would have added another period of drift longer than some Terran languages have existed to date.
One recent character was SubLieutenant Sir Denis Karashum Beauchene, OEG, Delphic Prize for Journalism - 1096 (Navy 2 terms, Journalist 2 terms, Dilettante 2 terms) of De Coupeland/Delphi. He usually leaves the Naval rank off since it not particularly impressive (O2); the Navy declined to award him a higher retirement rank when he was knighted eight years after leaving the service, so he leans more on his eight years as an investigative journalist and the prize (and Knighthood) that resulted. His family name is clearly derived from Old Terran French, while a later marriage brought a touch of Vilani background into his ancestry. No one these days is certain how important, or not, the Karashum family were, but the Beauchene clan makes sure they are remembered every generation.

Not to hijack this thread, but is your Sir Denis a Landed Knight?

Just introducing a slew of Bantu-language names would represent middle Africa pretty well.
Toss in some Chinese and Hindi names and you'll get a lot more coverage. Also some Arabic and Semitic names.
I'll make a list for you this weekend.
