Traveller Challenge Coin Concept Discussion

Over the past two years, I've been trying to come up with something suitable for use with Traveller that would represent it, but not just say "Traveller". Several of you have brought to my attention Challenge Coins, from a variety of kickstarter events. I like the idea, but the question arises: What to have the coin(s) represent?

DonM suggested that I open the question up to the posters on COTI: Suggest a suitable established canon OTU event [military or naval unit; organization; affinity group; or other] that would likely have a Challenge Coin created for it. This opens up the notion for Darrian and Sword Worlder coins in addition to Imperial and Solomani coins, and certainly other races may have picked up the practice.

Don's suggestion of a Hiver 'Challenge Coin Manipulation Coin' has been specifically disallowed, and especially his suggested design of 'multiple Hivers holding multiple challenge coins, all different'.

Imperial: Year 0, Founding of the Imperium.
Solomani: 2091 AD, Invention of the jump drive.
Zhodani: 582.3, Invention of the Jump drive.
Vargr: <Absolutely no consensus>
Aslan: 0, First Sitting of the Tlaukhu.

It's worth noting that while there are unit specific challenge coins, there are also service-wide challenge coins as well, arguably also branch-specific coins also. While some special unit specific ones might be cool, given the dearth of multiple canon units across races I'd suggest moving the service and branch as the basic models for purchase.

Also, a Rule of Man Navy coin might be popular. As might be the various elements of the Imperial Guard.

For "event based" challenge coins... The various Frontier Wars, the Battle of Two Suns, any other notable battle mentioned in canon. Perhaps

As a further idea for naval characters you might consider "ship coins" - so looking for canon ship names would be the route to go there. Scouts might simply use "ship classes" instead of individual ships if you want to argue that the traditions are different - they might also do something based around world/system discovery as well (the "Regina" coin, dates based on the discovery of Regina).

It might be interesting to have challenge coins for the various orders of knighthood, or psionic institutes.

In any case, there are some ideas!

Do we know of any assignments the 4518th, the Duke's own Huscarles, were a part of?

Don's suggestion of a Hiver 'Challenge Coin Manipulation Coin' has been specifically disallowed[...]'.

You've ruled out my favorite challenge coin idea...

IISS "Solo" coin - one man, superimposed on a scoutship
IISS "Mail Coin" X-boat on one side, starburst w/poni on the other.

Fifth Frontier War coin
Sector Fleet coin
Exploration beyond the Imperium coin - similar to Andre Norton's Far Roving Star award
Psionic Institute coin - also useful for undercover identification
Knighthood coin
Friend of the Herd coin - K'Kree coin
Honor Guard coin - from an ArchDuke

Another idea - elite training courses or assignments

I'm a Scouter and have just finished Wood Badge received a coin Had two symbols for Wood Badge (One on either side) and one one side had the Council and year of training.

I'm thinking -
Intell School
Commando Training
Aide/Attache
Contact School

One side Starburst in Branch color the other where or for whom, year of assignment and a symbol indicating the assignment.

Just ideas

BTW - one for TAS would be cool too :D

Been thinking.

In Roman times every emporer would produce coinage with his picture on it.

So....Each time there is a new Emp all serving troops would receive a coin in his likeness.

OR

Every major campaign would get a coin minted.

OR

Unit Coins or service coins (scouts, Navy, Army, Merchant line. Ect)

OR...the big one

A coin for TAS members

Then there is the whole nobility thing, a coin for all card carrying Imp Knights and up. The same could be done for other races.

Last minute thought....

A coin for Darrian Navy members who have served on thier high tec reserve fleet ships.

Coolness!

I would love to see Challange Coins and think all the suggestions so far are good.

We could do one for Psionics, but most folks seem to think it a big washer, but then that is the 'blind' for ya. : p

Howard Tayler over at Schlock Mercenary did a whole series of challenge coins. He ran a Kickstarter for them.

It would be nice for a whole series for Traveller as well.

There appears to be a lot of ideas, however, the master for each coin does cost a reasonable sum of money, so the more coin designs, the higher the initial outlay of funds, and the higher the cost of the individual coins, as there would be fewer of each type made and sold.

The number of options could quickly spiral out, it sounds like a survey needs to be set up.

While there's a myriad of possibilities, why not keep it down to a few for starters, say for well-known formations from canon:

125 Fleet: Defenders of Jewell
100 Fleet: The Sword Breakers
Corridor Fleet: No Consulation Prize
154 Battle Rider Squadron: On Target (or alternatively, given it's transfer to the 100 Fleet in 1109, also The Sword Breakers)
4518 LIR: The Duke of Regina's Own Huscarls

I'm sure there's more that could be done, but given the coins are primarily done for military units maybe that could be the initial focus. Sticking to canon could also keep it simpler.
