Traveller Classes on TL 1 Worlds

TL 1 is the tech level of Dungeons and Dragons. All the nonmagical equipment found in the D&D Player's handbook could be found in a Traveller TL 1 and available for sale at the player handbooks listed price in gold pieces. Supose I wanted to create such a world for the Traveller Game and the PCs starship lands outside a medeval city. (This world is kind of a lost colony with humans and imported livestock on it) A knight comes trotting up to the starship in shiny full plate male on a barded horse. Now the question is, what character type is he?

Is he a Barbarian? He is a knight and would be insulted if you called him a barbarian and might even try to impale you with his lance.

Is he a member of th Army Service Class?

Is he a member of the Noble core class?

The knight himself would certainly consider himself a member of the the nobility. But if I were to role up his character which character class should I use?

Barbarian is the recommendation according to the THB. But just b/c that's his class doesn't mean you refer to him that way. Barbarian is supposed to cover basically all the people in a very low tech society. You may be able to squeak by with Low-Tech Army, but I think that would be about the extent of your posssibilities.

If you're not sure, I would say look at the skill and feat lists for a class. If there's no way a person could have learned more than half of them in his normal environment, then I would say you shouldn't use that class for that character.

Hello Tom Kalbfus,

Here are my thoughts on your questions:

Is he a Barbarian? He is a knight and would be insulted if you called him a barbarian and might even try to impale you with his lance.

From the viewpoint of the starship crew the knight is a barbarian. This is based on the cultural and technological differences between the knight and crew. Look at how the European colonists viewed the native populations of the Americas. The Chinese and Japanese viewed each other as barbains, not to mention how both viewed the European cultures.

Depending on the knight's age and how many combats the person has been in will determine the response. A young, brash, and very arrogant knight might try to use the lance and might even take out a party member or two before someone uses a high tech weapon to take out the knight. A knight with some seasoning will probably make allowances, at least for time, before trying to take on the ship's crew.

Is he a member of the Noble core class?

In Traveller there are many levels of noble class. The elite of this class is of course the members of the 3rd Imperium. So, yes he is a member of the Noble class of his world and may recieve some of the rights given to an Imperial noble.

Is he a member of th Army Service Class?

Yes, he is a member of a low tech military, however because of the difference in TL there are fewer skills available. Since the knight is from a TL 1, he might be familiar with primitive firearms, but his real strength will be with sword, lance, shield, and other equipment from that age.

Basically, in T20 Traveller the knight is basically a multiclass character whith very limited bits of Noble, Army service, and whatever a politician falls under.
