• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

Traveller Discord server

There is already a Discord page called Citizens of the Imperium.
I'm not criticizing, but with 4 or more G+ groups (until next year sometime), 2 or more Discord pages, 2 or more MeWe pages, a Reddit page, Mongoose and other forums, and who know what else, are we in danger of fracturing the community?

Huh. I had no idea there was already a Discord page. How does one get an invite to that server?

I would say that is a reasonable possibility.

Yes, I eventually found out about this and noted it in the other thread. It's not exactly well-advertised, though, since I never heard from it before I created my server and nobody mentioned a server already existed when I discussed creating a Discord server for Traveller. In the other thread, I already asked whether other people think I should just post a link to the other server on my server and then delete my server, or keep it.

For reference, here's a link to the other Traveller server: https://discordapp.com/invite/RfpP6Ru

I would say that is a reasonable possibility.

You know, not everything has to be negative all the time. It's allowed for things to be positive!

Welcome to the party on the COTI Discord! Make yourself at home, fans of any Edition! #questions, #creativity, #lfg, #lfp, #homebrew, game rooms, voice rooms, and more!

Live via satellite, this is the Pakkrat

What are these supposed to mean, if I may ask?

Those are the names of channels on the CotI Discord Server where one looks for games or players, respectively. Generally, channel names on any Discord server start with #. I believe this to be a holdover from earlier chat communities (such as IRC).

I assume that the operator of the server receives some benefit from the more players or games that are being run on it.

Anyone can set up a server/group/channel.

It's an ad free environment, and the company that hosts it says they're against either an ad based revenue model or sharing of user data.

Their current model is to sell upgraded services on a subscription basis with the goal being to keep the core functionalities (which are chat and voice channels, ostensibly for gaming, but anyone can use them) free.

They also recently added a videogame sales component. Which does show, briefly, at startup.

To follow up on the above answers and directly answer your question: the operator(s) of a server do not receive compensation of any form directly from the makers of Discord. (They are the operator(s) of a larger community, which is an ego boost and thus reward for some, but that doesn't come from Discord's makers.)

So for the moment, the communities themselves are free (in financial terms), and seem likely to remain that way.

I go by the rule that nothing is free. Someone is always paying the bills.

TANSTAFL...

The open source stuff is free to a point - there are people maintaining it generally. Some companies make business via selling support services (see Red Hat, which just got bought by IBM for a LOT of credits!).

The people hosting the servers are paying for it: either bandwidth or whatever. For a lot of people doing this, though, they are already paying for an internet connection and this is just subsumed into that. And as mentioned, they may get a certain amount of pride and joy sharing something they love.

This board itself is basically free: some people pay (I do as I get a lot out of it) but it is a free service essentially for the users. Someone is paying for the server and internet access but it is not the users.

Moot subs cover most of the operation expenses. Staff are volunteers.
