Traveller in Fantasy Grounds?

Flynn

SOC-14 1K
Good Morning, All,

I picked up the Fantasy Grounds electronic tabletop application at GenCon this year, and have actually played a few test games with it. Now that I feel better about using it, I'm curious. Does anyone use FG to run Traveller games online, in any particular system?

I'm interested in possibly joining the occasional One Shot, or even a semi-regular game if it does not otherwise interfere with my over-scheduled life at the moment? Something once or twice a month would be preferable.

Please let me know,
Flynn

Hi Flynn,
I didn't know ayone had done a ruleset for Traveller for FG. I still use Klooge for my T20 campaign. And Grip is ready for either CT or T20. (If your GM has the licenses the players get to play for free, with these.)

I'm using Grip and running an adventure with Valerian most Sundays at 8pm...allcomers welcome!

pm me if you'd like to have a crack.

Neither Grip nor Klooge covered all the things I wanted, truth be told.

And since I've already spent money on FG since that's what my friends use for their D20 stuff, I'd rather not have to spend another $40 to get the Master & Client arrangement for Klooge, or $31.50 for the GRIP download.

There's a generic character sheet ruleset for FG that can be used to cover Traveller characters under the traditional CT and MT styles, so I'm not worried about the ruleset for Traveller just yet. (Besides, I'll probably write my own once v2.0 is finally through beta.)

I'm just testing the waters to see what's out there, and see if there's anything being run on FG. I knew the chances would be low, but I wanted to give it a shot.

Thanks,
Flynn

Ravs,

What does 8pm translate to over here across the pond? I'm in the Central Time Zone, so would that be 2PM my time? If so, that might be a bit outside a regular schedule for me. My Sundays are pretty hectic, so I doubt I could do more than a guest shot every once in a while.

That, and I'd have to install the GRIP player's client first.

Thanks,
Flynn

Since FG is geared towards d20, then T20 shouldn't be much of a stretch...

Well the good news is it's free... ;)

(And I tackled both GRiP and kLoOge.Werks for the T20 rules.) FG also doesn't automate things like GRiP and kLoOge.Werks do. (Even for D20.) Since a D20 definition (Ruleset in FG, character sheet in GRiP.) file comes with Klooge going to T20 wasn't all that difficult.

The other thing I don't like about FG is that you have to buy it as a player. Before you know if you even want to run in the GM's campaign. There are several people I chat with about Traveller, or other things, but unless I have seen them run a campaign I wouldn't want to pay to play. That is, as far as I am concerned, one of the major advantages of GRiP, kLoOge.Werks and ScreenMonkey. The players either play for free or the GM can provide enough licenses for the players to at least get started for free.

The other major advantage, as far as I am concerned, with GRiP and kLoOge.Werks is the automated character sheets. Just push a button and the correct dice are rolled, with the right modifiers. Granted that takes a little setting up, but once it is set up it makes the rules and charts less important and you can concentrate on the story.

The one thing about FG that I thought was neat is the dice roller, but it is a gimmick that gets old in a hurry. Now I am looking for a way to automate my normal die rolling for FG.

BTL, any suggestions for a starting point for setting up a kLoOge.Werks def file for CT/MT. None of the included definitions seem to be close enough for converting and I dread starting from scratch.

dunno Flynn, you'll have to look up some website which tells you the difference between GMT and Central Time. I have placeholder characters which you can fill in for if you want to drop in for a time.

You'll need to download the grip client and then you'll need to get onto the Grip boards which is here

get onto the chat bit (which is hard to find...it's right at the bottom of the boards in very small text) at 8.00 pm GMT.

cheers

One thing about GRIP is that although I purchased the software, I could never seem to get past the password authorization for what I purchased. After a time, I just gave up on it. At one point in time, I thought it had something to do with "OH's" and "Zeros" being mistaken for each other - but that didn't help either. Perhaps it doesn't work on XP? Ah well, nothing I've lost sleep over ;)

(I guess that's partially because the book that came with it was worth the money alone)

Flynn, Central time is 6hrs less than GMT so 8pm is 2pm CT, unless DLSavings messes it up...

You could use this Timezone Converter

Hal, I'm sure we could get your GRiP working, just PM me or come over and visit at the GRiP Forums

Even in my busy schedule, I managed to fit another session in Mal's Terra Incognita GRiP Traveller campaign... good stuff!

It isn't that different, you just have to change the dice mechanics. It does make a difference for CT, AHL, Snapshot, Striker, or MT though as to how hit points are covered. (When playing CT I tended to use the SnapShot rules for personal combat.) It also makes a difference how initiative is covered.

Pick one and PM me and I'll lend a hand.

Well I had no issues and I use XP. Are you using the SN that you got via email or the one that came in the box. (Since you got the book I assume you got one of the boxed editions.) With mine either worked. I just copied and pasted the email number into the request for SN and everything ran fine from there.

</font>[/QUOTE]There is an issue in that the GRiP client is currently unavailable. (I tried downloading it the other day.) If you send out the IP address to your players each week that the chat client is not actually required. I found that, from the IPC module the IRC connection is buggy so forgoing chat worked better. Though if everyone downloads IGM and uses that it works fine. (And while your IGM will time out you can still use the IPC module from it without paying for it.)
