TRAVELLERCON 2015

How is this event shaping up? Seems like there are still lots of empty player slots left to fill and the event is only a few weeks away. I'm considering going up there to play, and would like someone's opinion about how successful this event is looking to be from a players perspective.

The event was, in a word, AWESOME.

Other than an in-store con at my FLGS last year the last time I was at a gaming convention was when I was at RIT in the late 80's and was part of the Rochester Wargaming Association and Guild and we put on our own convention at the school, of which I was "Director of Security" one year and "Director of Logistics" another year. With that in mind I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived.

What I did find was an extremely warn and friendly welcome from a room full of other Traveller enthusiasts who made me and my friend Chris feel like we were part of the family from the moment we arrived. It was great to not only meet many people from this forum, but to play the game with them (both with them as GM and fellow player). It was a great experience and I already have it penciled into my calendar for next year! And I plan on brining my entire Traveller group with me if possible (they just don't know it yet...).

It was great to meet you, DickNervous!

My events went very well, despite my nervousness about them. Recall that I was in a similar boat at last year's event. Last time around, I had never actually refereed a game of Traveller and I was running an ATU game for all the (not really) cranky grognards who were (not really) going to tell me I was doing it wrong.

This year, I ran the same Nova Roma event I ran last year, giving John Watts a chance to play this time. It went amazingly well. I debuted two new games.

The first new one was my Time Traveller adventure, set 75 years into the future of the Nova Roma adventure. In fact, the group went back in time to STOP the actions of the Nova Roma game that we had just played out, and it was big fun.

The second new one was a normal Imperium game that I called Merchants of Venus. It was a "mustering out and starting a free trader" game, but I had prepared six beat-up ships, all between 100 and 300 tons, and badly in need of repair. I don't believe in the "highly optimized" build in my games, so these ships had all kinds of weird issues that the PCs investigated. I also got to try out my four-term accelerated character generation system, which got good reviews from the players.

All three games were a success, despite me being extremely tired. I'd taken Thursday off work to finish my adventure prep and stayed up till 4 AM finishing, then drove up to Lancaster on Friday afternoon. I ran all three of my four-hour game sessions on Saturday, starting at 8 AM and finishing at 11 PM. I was so wiped out that I just slept in on Sunday and missed that morning game session.

I had an absolutely fantastic time. Everyone made me feel very welcome. I'm very, very glad I was able to come. My games went great, and I am looking forward to supporting the Kickstarter again next year.

I had a blast.

The Adventure I ran (Aslan, SolSec, & Susag, Oh My!) went really well. The players had fun & I drove the engineer crazy, everything she came up with had an audio response from the station AI from Hal 9000 that fit.

The games I participated in were great - I won the 2015 Ping Award for successfully figuring out a solution to the in-game problem and getting killed and eaten while doing it. And the character that caused most of us to get killed never got so much as a scratch.
