Vega Strike

There is a pretty cool starship simulation software out there called Vega Strike. You play an owner of a moderate-sized merchant ship. You fly around the galaxy. As you do, you can make money being a free trader, bounty hunter, or pirate. You can even buy other ships. The cockpits look different with every ship and the ship's components are configurable. New mods take up cargo space but they improve performance. Here are some points for it:

1. It looks pretty good: You need 3d acceleration for the game, but it's worth it. The ships look awesome and the play is smooth.

2. It's Multi-Platform: The latest developments are built for linux first, then quickly ported to WIN32 and Mac OS X.

3. It is in development : but don't let that steer you away. Every new version makes the universe larger. They are currently at version 0.4.0 as of now. They will reach v 1.0 once they get multi-player code installed.

4. Best of all.... IT'S FREE and OPEN SOURCE!!!: No charge. All you need is a high speed ISP (the download file is over 160Mb's). The linux version gives you the source code so you can modify the program to your tastes. Other people have already and have posted their mods - like the Star Trek and Wing Commander mods.

Why isn't there any multi-player options???
As I posted up above, it isn't in yet. The developers are working on that aspect now. They claim they are about 55% done with the code. Expect it to be implememted soon.

I found a bug. What do I do?
Contact the developers. They listen to everyone. There is a message forum at the main site. You can post your bugs there, or whatever you want to talk about. You can even suggest what to put in the next build.

Ok, you convinced me to at least try it out. Where do I get it?????????
Here!!!!!

Hope This Helps!

Interesting.

Have you played it? (I assume so)

If so, on what platform (OS)? What kind of graphics card?

Did you have any issues with installation? Any conflicts with other software?

Looking at this, and its customizations for Star Wars, Star Trek, and Wing Commander, it strikes me that this might be an interesting item to try to customize for Traveller (NO THAT WAS NOT ME VOLUNTEERING.... I'm not a penguin-o-phile).

It would be interesting to see the Beowolf and the Suleiman and perhaps some of the other ships in just such an environment.

Scarecrow or a few of the other folks could surely bash up some models.

Yep. Wasted many hours raking in da credits! ;)

Linux, WIN32(ya know the OS's from Mr. Gates??), and MAC OS X as of now. Pretty much any decent 3d accellerator card will do. I use Nvidia Gforce 4 64mb. Works fine.

Linux version has some issues compiling. As always, keep your libraries updated. Got it done, though. The WIN32 are binaries. There is no problem installing under XP. I am sure there will be no prob for other WIN32 systems. I do not have a PPC with OS X as of now, so I have no opinion on the matter.

Hope This Helps.

I've got a 2K and an XP box here. The XP box has a Radeon Pro 9700. So sounds like I should have the horsepower.

Mind you, the 21-26 kbps I'm getting on dial up deters me from the DL... ;)
