What kind of class is ideal for new players?

I'm preparing to run a game with some friends of mine. Some of them, like Veltyen, are already knowledgable about the system and have been role playing for years. One of them has never role played before in his life and wants to see what it's like.

What in your opinion is the best class in T20 to act as an introduction to the game, for a new player? And by new I mean never played before in his life, T20, CT or otherwise.

See if this was D&D I'd simply say 'take the Fighter class'. Easy to get into, easy to understand - "Conan smash!!!" - and as time goes by you get used to the game. The problem is: D&D is heavily combat oriented, whereas in T20 combat is decidedly deadly (as it should be).

For the record, the campaign I got lined up is influenced by the adventure Scout Cruiser. Modified heavily because the setting is an original one, and not based on the OTU in any way.

You will have to talk to him and ask what type of character he wants, marine, navy, professor, Gillian.
Then do a straight build of one.

My thinking would be a Scout or a rouge. Good variety of skills and feats.

I would want something that brings him in the action so he can participate. Nothing kills the entusiasm of a new player than sitting around doing nothing.

Alot depends on your campaign to. A merc in a far trader game might not have a lot to do, conversly a mechant in a military game may not be the best either.

Most classes work pretty well, I think. Traveller, Rogue, Scout are all good choices, but with the possible exception of Noble or Barbarian, I don't think any of the classes present any significant challenges that the other classes wouldn't

It all depends on the person, Is he into sf or fantasy at all? Have him pick an archtype from TV, a book or film, then adapt that to the game, That way both you and him know what type of character he has in mind rather than jamming him into a class.

A lot depends on the type of campaign you are planning. First and foremost you should make sure that both the GM and player are on the same page as to what both are looking for and want to do. The GM should communicate his house rules, campaign theme and intended atmosphere to potential players. Players should communicate what kind of game they are looking for and what kind of players they are. Once(if)this basic and necessary understanding has been established, then the GM should sit down with the players individually and help build a character concept and personna for PCs. Once the player has a character concept s/he is satisfied with the player will generally find it easy to select what character profession/class is appropriate for the situation.
