what would happen if...

darue

SOC-9
a general thread for those midnight wonderings... Those "what would happen if..." questions and theories.

Q1: what if a psionic character used abilities to try to 'view' beyond the jump bubble? :oo:

possibilities:

1. it would "look" like being in a room of mirrors
2. sanity crisis
2a. small chance of going Gary Mitchel on everybody
3. maybe see normal space going by at superluminal speed?
4. ...?

Q2: ...?

I think your list would be a nice random table for just that happening.

Another one could be:

4. You swear you saw a large dark creature writhing in JumpSpace, and you start to hear a thumping on the hull.

In Dave Nilsen's Q&A for TNE on this very site the topic of metaconscious psionic entities living in jump space was mentioned as being something that TNE would have explored had GDW not gone to the wall.

Which made me think of Cthulhu mythos like entities living in jump dimensions. But then I thought - what if they are more like the T:2300 Pentapod gods, possibly mixed with the extra-dimensional alien at the en of the Bayern adventure.

A psionic in jump space using his/her abilities to perceive beyond the jump bubble may just attract the attention of one of these - results to be determined by the ref but could include all sorts of horrible horrible plot points ;)

I can't remember where I read it (Traveller source though) but there was something about Scouts reporting extra normal hull noises while in jump space. IIRC this was in the Rift sector?

It reminds me of the story that appeared quite a while back in Analog, which can be read online here.

The title is a "Nice Day for Screaming". by James Schmitz, of Witches of Karres fame. The final sentence should peak the interest of every one.

They started back to the engine room entrance Keth mentally phrasing the manner in which he would explain to Adacee's waiting billions of viewers that the pseudospace ship—one of Man's great achievements—had been halted, engulfed, checked, fueled, loaded up and released by somebody else's automatic depot and service station for intergalactic robot cargo carriers.

And then there is Kinsolving Planet in A. Bertram Chandler's Rim planets, where things that go "bump" in the night are the norm.

And the Seafort Saga by David Feintuch, which has intelligent life-forms capable of both living in space and traveling FTL (as well as damaging or destroying Terran starships) without need for a starship.

Then there are the Dragons of "The Game of Rat and Dragon", a short story written by Cordwainer Smith, part of the Instrumentality of Mankind series.

The Game of Rat and Dragon, by Cordwainer Smith can be downloaded from Project Gutenberg at the following location.

Thanks to Leo and Hans for the info. As the grey matter ages it's hard to remember where I once read something and the collective memory of CotI is a great thing to have.
