As mentioned in the Adventurer's post for Jack Garrett, Shunsi was the Ship's Steward on a 200 ton Free Trader, along with Federico Olivares (Ship's Captain and Pilot), Jack Garrett (Navigator), and James MacDonald (Ship's Engineer). The campaign was set in the Third Imperium shortly after the Fourth Frontier war, in the District Red 27 subsector from the Mongoose Traveller core rule book. This subsector IMTU was in the Beyond Sector, but like the Five Sisters subsector in the Spinward Marches Sector a detached part of the Third Imperium.

Shunsi is tall at 1.9 meters, of average but wiry build with thinning black hair, dark brown almost black eyes, and the high levels of muscle flexibility you get growing up on an Orbital space station with unreliable artificial gravity. When working he tend to wear expensive, highly formal garments of a conservative cut, or the uniform of which ever shipping line he is working for. Off duty he tends to wear made to measure expensive Nabethi garments.
Shunsi grew up on the Katamachi space habitat, to a large family who ran their own company repairing and maintaining some of the numerous space habitats in orbit around the world of Nabeth, an Imperial Client state in the Egryn subsector of the Trojan Reach. Although Shunsi enjoyed working on the space habitats, he disliked the fact as a younger son; he would probably spend most of his life being bossed around by his older siblings. Thus at eighteen he quit the family firm, and persuaded the Captain of the Long Trader “Silver Dancer” to take him on as a crewman initially in Engineering.
As with the crews on most small traders, and the Silver Dancer only displaced 500 tons, Shunsi ended up doing a little bit of everything from operating the comms system to going out in a vacc suit to make repairs to the ship’s hull. It was at this early stage in his career, Shunsi meet Federico Olivares (player character/contact), who gave the newbie Free Trader some good advice on how to develop his career in the Merchants. To his surprise Shunsi found he most enjoyed, that frequently most unpopular job with ships’ crews, looking after the passengers.
When at the start of his second term, the Silver Dancer’s steward was injured Shunsi took over the job of Ship’s Steward and was promoted. As steward Shunsi operated on the principle that “the passenger is always right”. This he felt should apply even if what the passenger wanted in the way of drugs, herbs, and equipment or paid for “company” of the opposite/same sex was illegal under local planetary law, or even under Imperial law. As a result Shunsi developed skills in streetwise and persuasion, and some unusual contacts in the Trojan Reach/Spinward Marches border areas where the Silver Dancer traded. If at the time he was asked about the morality of his actions, he always fell back on the expression “giving the customer/passenger what they want”, and the well known tradition of the inhabitants of Nabeth, being excellent if unscrupulous traders, in and around the Imperial borders.

During his Third term, Shunsi meet Silvio Leopardo (notorious smuggler and contact), who offered Shunsi the chance to make a lot of money, using Silver Dancer to smuggle goods for Silvio’s wide ranging criminal gang. For a year or so the deal worked well, until the new ship’s captain Anna Hazare (Ship’s Captain and enemy) found out and reported Shunsi to the authorities on Glisten.
Shunsi had to spend all the money he had earned on legal fees to avoid a long prison sentence, in the process learning a little about Imperial Law. Although his smuggler contact Silvio, had left him in the lurch, Shunsi’s refusal to name his criminal contacts, lead to some “help” from the smuggler. One witness against Shunsi, Carlo Billon, vanished without a trace, and another Bernard Lamy, withdrew his testimony. Although cleared of the major charges, Shunsi found it difficult to get another job on a Free Trader in the Spinward Marches Sector , so relocated to District Red 27 subsector in the Beyond Sector.
At this point Shunsi at the start of his fourth term gained a job as a Co-Pilot and Cargo Marshall on the RX class Trader, Arisha series “Star of Paya” which operated in the District Red 27 and Border Marches subsectors. As the ship had a Captain and a senior pilot, Shunsi spent most of his time as cargo Marshall negotiating with Starport Cargo Brokers, and became a very talented broker himself. On the whole Shunsi found Cargo Brokers rather less honest and trust worthy than the career criminal smugglers he had dealt with earlier in his career. Late in his fourth term, the Fourth Frontier War broke out between the Imperium and the Zhondani Consulate. Although the main battle grounds were in the Spinward Marches, the District Red 27 subsector was badly hit by Zhondani licensed privateers.
Shunsi was approached by the local Subsector Fleet, and persuaded to “volunteer” for duty as a gunner /steward on the Q ship IQS Tamarisk in return for the Navy not mentioning to his current employers the trial for smuggling he underwent. The only people who knew the true nature of the Tamarisk were Captain Kumar Singh (Imperial Marine Officer and ally), Starport Administrator Michiko Sato (contact) and Conrad Mainz an Imperial Intelligence Service Agent (contact).
The Q ship missions worked well and destroyed or captured eight privateers, before a final messy battle. This time the privateer turned out to be a powerful Theev based Cutlass class Pirate Cruiser “The Widow’s Lament” part of the fleet of notorious pirate Petyr Vallis. Normally a standard Q ship could not defeat a pirate ship of this size. However the element of surprise and the leadership of Captain Singh, lead to a great victory, aided by Shunsi’s successful gunnery attack on the Pirate’s Rail gun and Beam Laser Bays. This earned Shunsi, Captain Singh’s friendship, and a glowing reference from the Subsector Navy to his “bravery, honesty and good character”.
The reference enabled Shunsi in his fifth term to gain the post of Purser (Chief Steward) with the M class Passenger Liner “Karin” which operated all over the District Red 26 and Red 27 subsectors., as the “flag ship” of a small shipping line called Baum and Langdon. Towards the end of his fifth term an illness forced Shunsi to temporarily leave the “Karin”, which three weeks later vanished without trace somewhere in the Golok system of District Red 27 ending his Free Trader career.
With no job to go to, Shunsi has joined his old friend Federico Olivares as Ship's steward on his Free Trader. However Shunsi's numerous skills and varied contacts will make him more than just a everyday Ship's Steward.
