The problem isn't GURPS Traveller, its GURPS. While SJG has put quite a bit of effort into their products, the charcters to me lack variablity. With only four stats and the costs to buy stats other than 11's and 12's makes many characters very similar. Then when you give players the ability to buy disadvantages for more points, they tend take the less dangerious disadvantages that gets them the most points. The game is set up for metagaming and every time I've tried to either play or ref in GURPS the charcters just don't cut it.Originally posted by phydaux:
Same as you, I prefer to play. It's just that I learned back in the '70s unless SOMBODY ref'ed, then NOBODY played.
Actually, "lonely ref" refers to my being the only person in the known UNIVERSE who likes GURPS:Traveller. I could never find anyone to play with, or for that matter, find anyone on the internet who liked it.
Now I have to admit, I have GUPRS Traveller, and I haven't even touched it. I just don't like the GURPS game system and I think you will find that a lot among a) Traveller fans and b) potental gamers. This is one of the things that makes T20 so inviting is that all the 3E D&D players now are potential Traveller players since they don't have to learn a new system
I don't know how successful you will be but I have the strong feeling that if you advertise it right, you will have some success.
So now I'm looking at T20. No one at my FLAGS seems interested. I was thinking of doing a demo to see what I could drum up.
I think part of the problem is we don't have our books yet. I'm hoping for a UPS ground run today, but I just ordered my book last Thursday and apparently the backlog of pre-orders may have my order backlogged. Hopefully I will hear from Hunter today. But it would be a bit hard for me to generate you a character with no book in hand.I HONESTLY believed within an hour or so of posting, I’d have 12-18 characters to choose from for the demo.
