Serenity

I haven't seen Serenity, so I don't know anything about the ship in question, but the conversion factor is 13.5 cubic meters or 500 cubic feet = 1 Traveller displacement ton.

If you don't have dimensions, you have to eyeball it and estimate from there.

I would say the consensus is around 400 tons with two 20 ton gigs. For Traveller I would give it Jump 1 2G. You can do what you like i to think ther eis a consensus on the 400 tons seeing the other designs are all around 400.

Free Trav not seeing Firefly is cause for banishment or worse. Possibly the most Travelleresqe sci fi yet.

Eye-balling it I would say smaller then 400 tons myself. Look at pictures of the Subsidized Merchant (400 tons) and the Serenity, both with peeps beside them. The Serenity seems smaller then the big, fat trader. If you can get everything to fit, I would go with possibly 300 tons and two 10 or 20 ton small craft. It seems bigger then a Free Trader, but smaller then a Fat Trader.

I worked out about 350 plus small craft (which are external) about 2 years ago.

Which puts it about 400 tons

Well, I saw it and couldn't stand more than an ep or two.

Ironically the movie was more bearable than the series.

I saw it, and really enjoyed it. Oddly enough it's the background stuff you don't "see" that makes it interesting.
Who are the blue hand men?

why is River crazy?

What was Book before he became a shepherd?

Will Mal always run?

Why is Inara running? And what is she running from?

How did Mal lose his faith?

Questions about unknown things that never were addressed in the shortened series but make wonderful background.

400t

Blue hand men are some sort of psi group? (not sure about this one without looking it up)

Experiments done on her brain and coming to terms with her psi powers.

Book was an ex operative.

Yes.

She isn't running, she's just making a living from her profession.

Losing the war and seeing so many friends killed.

My deckplans put her at 200t, unless I'm mistaken. But I agree that 400t is more likely.

QUOTE]

According to her friend in the episode Heart of Gold she's running.
"She could have been house mistress, I don't know why she left"

In the episode Shindig she had the opertunity to be "kept" qiute well and practice her occupation. She didn't.

She's practicing her occupation on the worst worlds in the alliance.

She's Running!

the qusetion is From What or Who?

She seems to be running "with Mal" but Mal's too bigoted to admit that the two of them are in love, and she's too proud.

In other words... she's not "running", she's "chasing" Mal... until she accepted that his problems keep him from accepting her, then she went back to the House.

Firefly

A few thoughts.
  1. Low Tech interplanetary drives bringing up tonnage. But most designs are for our traveller universe.
  2. Traveller universe: adding jump drives and fuel.
  3. A lot of empty cargo space. I really don't see the volume in a freetrader. Serenity has never filled that hold.

Or a combination of the above...

Any idea what Firefly-class transport displaces in TRAVELLER tonnage?

On the cortexsystemrpg.org boards for the Serenity RPG, it was worked out that a Firefly actually displaces about 7000 tons by reference to the (extremely amazing) Serenity Deckplans Reference Pack published by Quantummechanix.

In the Serenity game, a ton is 100 cubic feet; in Traveller, roughly 500 cubic feet.

So, a Firefly displaces 1400 tons. QED.

Well, in the Serenity RPG book, is lists a Firefly as 2,400 Tons. That would make it 480 dTons in Traveller.

True. And all the boat designs in the Serenity RPG are based around that premise (if a Firefly is 2400 tons, and my boat is half that size, then my boat is 1200 tons).

Nevertheless, LynnleFey on the Cortex boards modelled a Firefly on the QMX deckplans and it came out as 7000 tons.

Personally, that seems *enormous*, but when you look at the QMX plans there's nothing you can safely brush under a rug and ignore...

1 traveller ton is 14 standard tons displacement that would make the Serenity at 7000 tons 500 tons in Traveller.

No - Serenity uses earth-standard register tons of 100 cubic feet; Traveller displacement tons are 500 cubic feet.

A Firefly is 700,000 cubic feet, so 1,400 traveller disoplacement tons.

;)
