Dimensions of Imperial Starburst (math help)

I am contemplating the shoulder patch for an Imperial Forces uniform. I envision a circular patch 3 inches (5.08cm)** in diameter to enclose Starburst. Am I low balling it or should it be greater.

Working upon the assumption of 3 inches being correct...what would be the dimensions of the inner circle and width of the band.

Far Trader's image

**Based upon my research into Real World Patches but I am open to hearing from others.

It should be 7.5, 8 or 10 cm, not 3". 3rd Imperium uses Metric, y'know.

Assuming 8cm diam The rays should be about 1cm, with 0.5cm clearance to edge, and about 0.5cm wide band inside, leaving 2cm of center disk.

I agree with Aramis that 5cm is probably on the small side, but 10cm is probably large. 7.5 or 8 seems about right. (but then 3 inches is 7.5cm).

I'll teach you to fish.
Assuming you want a patch about the same as Far Trader's design, take measurements from the design, divide the diameter of the inner circle by the overall width of the square, and multiply by the width of the patch.

On my screen, FT's image is 15cm across and the inner circle is 7.5cm in diameter (half)
so I go:
7.5/15*8 (for an 8cm square patch) to get an inner circle of 4cm diameter (still half).

You can then repeat the process for all your other measurements from the image, dividing by the width of the image and multiplying by the width of the patch in each case to scale the dimensions.

PS. I'm not sure about Aramis' dimensions, there, but check them out for yourself. :)
If he has an inner diameter of 2cm on an 8cm patch, there's going to be a lot more space around the sunburst than there is in FT's image.

OTOH, if FT's happy to let you, find some drawing software that will automatically scale an image for you. MS Paint will do it, so you don't need to spend a lot... :)

I have no problem using metric but I find that many other people do...10cm is too large having looked at military heraldry...which is why I settled upon 3 inches/7.5cm. But, as I said, I am open to suggestions.

The patch would be circular not square. If that would make a difference...

I am terrible at math...so forgive my ignorance.

Icos: I gave radii for the starburst... not diameters.

I guessed that was most likely. :)

No, the shape makes no difference. Just use the overall width/diameter of the patch as I indicated. Scaling is just a few multiplies and divides. If you have more questions, fire away, I'll talk you through step by step if you need it. :)
