T5 Sophont Spreadsheet V1.0

SOC-12
T5 Sophont Generator spreadsheet now available as an .xlsx file at this link

<link to file deactivated - new version available below>

Uses Rules as Written for T5 as much as possible - requires selection of a home world, a random home world is not generated.

Issues found with the T5 rules (reported in Errata Thread) and how they have been resolved in this spreadsheet are listed. Alternative options/house rules can be turned on or off. Marc has seen the spreadsheet and is aware of the issues listed.

No macros were harmed in making this spreadsheet so it should be fairly compatible with non-Excel programs

Cells are password protected for your own safety, but the password is provided for all but the legal page.

If you identify any errors/concerns in the T5 rules, add them to the errata threads. If you identify any issues with the spreadsheet let me know in this thread or PM me. I will try to update it as fast as possible as well as keep up to date with any errata Marc releases.

This was a project to boost my Excel-Fu so there is bound to be a few issues.

Note: The BFP Correction house rule is always on whatever the toggle until I get an alternative method to roll the BFP.

Download option link is broken.

Google puts up a red Too Big* banner for me which has a broken download link. If you go the File, Download it should download ok - did for me 1 minute ago.

Won't download on my ipad at all though.

* can't see how a 76KB file is too big for Google to handle

Using Chrome I can download the XLSX just fine. Looks nice, thanks!

BTW @admins: Can we have a sticky listing the currently available T5 apps?

File/ Download worked for me, Thanks.

Hello Fridge,
Is your T5 Sophont Generator spreadsheet able to handle Human too, or is it for the other alien races only?

Regards,

Hello Fridge,
Is your T5 Sophont Generator spreadsheet able to handle Human too, or is it for the other alien races only?

Regards,

It randomly generates the details of Sophonts (Aliens) as per T5 pages 537 to 559, ie what they look like, what stats they use, what senses they have, castes, sexes etc.

It is not a Character generator. You could use a sophont it generates to generate a character.

It could through random luck generate humans - I have seen it get very close on occasions.

First of all, thank you for this extremely helpful piece of work.

Strangely, when I selected the 'download' option from the red warning banner, I got a 'file not found' (in Chrome and Safari). However, selecting the 'File' menu top left and then choosing 'Download' worked fine.

I've been digging through this spreadsheet for the purposes of expanding the BeastMaker rules. And I've discovered that the BeastMaker rules have a number of tables which are either identical, or similar, to tables in the Sophont's rules.

The specific case I'm referring to here is Issues Errata 13: the Body Profile table. If you read the BeastMaker Body Profile rules on P. 583 (tables A, B, C, and rule D) you can generate a volume/mass of your Beast. But this won't agree with the calculation mass generated by the calculation from the characteristics.

I'm tempted to expand the body profile table the way you have in the spreadsheet (flux + flux = +10 - -10) but roll twice, once for width and once for depth to get a much wider range of body types.

I played around with the Beastmaker pages for Sophontmaker. Same problem in Beastmaker as Sophontmaker.

Sophontmaker size = volume in liters.
Length can also be generated as per p 559
P 559 also says that depth and width are equal for all body profile forms except sheet/leaf. Beastmaker matches this.

V=l x w x d. V and l are known so we can work out the value of w x d. w = d so the square root will give us the values of w and d.

T5 seems to assumes the body forms are cylinders of varying length and radius. Real world creatures have w and d being different in most instances. Once you determine one of w or d, the other can be calculated based on volume.

Haven't checked yet whether the values in the BFP tables match eg w=d=l/8 for given volumes.

@tjones: mass and volume based on characteristics assumes particular dimensions, I think. If you decide to select different dimensions then you can change the mass and volume. Again, I think.

In other words, it's MOARN at work.

@fridge: The difference between w and d in real life are minor. And by minor I mean it falls within reasonable error to the granularity of the system, and the game, enough of the time to make the extra detail burdensome.

I figured that out, but it's not clear from the text of the rules. What's confusing about this is, depending on the of reading the rules, there are multiple ways to calculate volume/mass of the sophont. Each one of which will produce (somewhat) different results.
