A different kind of patron... "Princess" Baysan Temirzhan

The problem with the get her in trouble or selling her off is dad is the equivalent of Kim Jong Un and when he finds out he's probably going to use the money he'd have paid you for success to pay a bunch of professional assassins to hunt you down and kill you...

How often does a nonaligned TL5 world get visits from assassins guilds?
She's just one of many opportunities. One or two years? That's really nailing down a timeline. She's probably more tech savvy than most. He probably has other options.

I know who you are. I know where you will be. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I have money. And I do have are a very particular set of agents, agents I have acquired over a very long career and that I pay with that money. Agents that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you bring back my daughter now, that'll be the end of it. My agents will not look for you, my agents will not pursue you. But if you don't, my agents will look for you, my agents will find you, and my agents will kill you.

A ww2 era culture. He's giving away the daughter. I think women are second class, at best, in this society and that he's gambling on getting something useful back.

However, I am surprised he didn't offer a trade deal after a couple years if he really wanted her back.

Yeah, right. TL5, and you're this bad--- with interstellar reach.

I don't buy the validity of the threat.

So these questions beg answering:

  • why doesn't bad boy Ted, nab the free trader. It's light years ahead.
  • Why send his daughter out into the blackness for skills
  • why is a ww2 TL5 Ted able to even demand anything?
  • planet with lots of people. Someone must not like him.

Possible reasons:
  • He already grabbed one and wants to jump 5-6 TLs, they are reverse engineering it. The girl may or may not know. But the crew would not cooperate.
  • He doesn't plan on letting them leave next time.
  • Needs her to figure out how to fly the one he has. She's expendable.
  • what if she's not really a princess.
  • He's legit per previous conversations.

TL 5 is the average. That planet's ruler almost certainly has some amount of personal / inner circle tech running up as high as say 10 or 11 he bought off world for his use.

Just because his subjects have to suffer driving something like a Trabant two stroke engine car made form resin and old clothes doesn't mean he does. He's got his own personal grav vehicle or three with drivers and body guards...

And, it could be he's sending the girl because she is both reliable (family) and expendable (not to inherit the throne)... Could be like Savage said, ulterior motives you don't know about behind this move.

If he's TLA/B then he doesn't need the crew to teach the girl.

Unless its selective tech he's imported, or only whatever he's managed to extort to that point...

He was not specific about the girls training. So?

He nabbed a ship. ;) Someone onboard is cooperating and no one else? Or their dead. Perhaps a Naval vessel. Far more valuable than a free trader.
Guess we need his stats, Homeworld etc.

A bit of a Post Script here, for some reason I can't get Paris Hilton's "The Simple Life" out of my mind. NO, I did not watch the show, but saw enough promos when it first aired (and thanks to the magic of YouTube I've just seen some highlights) that I feel it fits this particular "patron's" MO.

I still say go ahead and say "Yes" to the king's demands, then dump her off at the first port and high tail it to the next subsector. Just buy her a high passage home or something. What's the big deal? The king's gonna hunt you down for dropping her off with some tickets to get home? More like he'll shrug his shoulders then keep an eye out if you ever pass through his space again.

oh come on! a free trader with a king as a patron would be profitable beyond words! it would be worth it to try and make it work, she has an awful lot going for her right off the bat, and adventures in strange new worlds and meeting high-class people and a romance with the ship's captain may change her character.

(it's a game. sheesh.)

No argument here!
I'd walk away saying, "ok. We can train too we're not just another trader, but i do think we need to follow up with a trade deal, Your Highness"

Actually, the original had her getting beaten down nearly daily until she started being a reasonable crew member then in an epiphany she figured out how would it look if she couldn't go home an officer, just a crewmember. Better, when she returns home she gets married off to a worthless drunkard of a minor noble in a trade deal so she puts her brawling skills to good use...

In addition to trade treaties with the king, ask for a standing Letter of Marque since a legal member of the royal family is onboard. Maximize your pretty-princess privilege. The king isn't asking for much but to babysit and whet a prissy girl into keen spacer. As soon. As you lift, have that female princess in duty flight suit, scrubbing the head, degreasing the maneuver drive, cooking, cleaning, running Astrogation numbers, (over watched of course). If she still won't harden to pauper reality, onboard slave cargo girl in a boring hold is another answer.

Pretty much the less-ugly end of what I could anticipate. Unescorted and at the mercy of the ship's crew, she straightens up or she "gets the hose".

outstanding point and game hook. how did I miss that? well-done sir.

... and comes back to the boat! that's the spirit!

Warped as I am, I can't help but think of the following quote when looking at this thread. "Funny, she doesn't look Drewish..."
