MGT Only: 10-ton runabout

Brandon C

SOC-13
The runabout (sometimes derogatively referred to as a dinghy) is a very small boat for use on ships where an air/raft has insufficient performance and a launch is too large. The crew of one sits in a cockpit while the passengers ride in acceleration couches. The balance of passengers and cargo is often changed by the user. Some models have a control cabin rather than cockpit.

Using a 10-ton hull, the runabout is capable of 2G acceleration, carries 0.25 tons of fuel (good for 3 days), and has a crew of one. It has a Model/1 computer and standard electronics. The runabout carries five passengers and 4.05 tons of cargo. It is streamlined and costs MCr 5.32 (4.815 w/10% discount)

Utility vehicles are so sadly lacking in attention at times. It seems to me for every starship hundreds of pods, boats, and shuttles would be in service.

I added several to the book I am rewriting (for Mongoose :D) at the moment.

your version is pretty solid, it has all the features a small utility pod needs.

I'll second the notion about a lack of utility vehicles in Traveller in general.

I've always thought there would be a need for 5ton or 10ton 'jeeps' for merchant and transport ships, simple tasks like passenger transfer or moving standard cargo containers.

Outfitting a 5ton 'jeep' for rescue-repair duties would be another consideration.

I wrote up some 5 ton small craft for GT a few years ago:

Ya know "Jeep" is a good term..It originally was taken from the Initial GP..general purpose...or so I have heard.

I have those on the list, actually they have been there from teh start..however until the new version 10 ton was the smallest you could go...but one ton EVA "hardsuits/workframes" and 5 ton travel pod/Jeeps can now be built...at least I am hoping I can make them work.

I have grav trucks as a primary cheap orbital tool, moves 10 ton containers and has room for 4 passengers in the cab.

Rescue robot sled that lugs people and hull repair/cutting equipment, suits and auto returning autodocs.

Do you have those with T5 stats?
which ones????..I know I'd like to have the full write up for the runabout :D so I can use it as an alternative to my own little pods in my games

not a bad idea. I had always figured some folks would use Air rafts and grav cehicles as utility skiffs well either sealed up or fitted for people in EVA suits

Air/rafts do have their place and obvious conveniences but a vac-suit only provides so much protection against the hazard of puncture-penetration by foreign objects incidental or intentional.

Mind pods or runabouts are not armored vehicles, nor or such intended to be, but that 'extra' layer of life-support redundancy could be the difference between close-call and catastrophic-closure for a PC experiencing a compromised vac-suit.

Grav trucks have enclosed cabs.

Union rules.
