1983 Traveller Starter Edition

BillDowns

SOC-13
For you grognards out there who know this (and haven't gone senile yet ;) ) How does the edition in the subject differ from the LBBs 2nd edition?

I have not yet examined it in detail, but is definitely different from my 1st edition LBBs.

Thanks, guys.

I think Starter Traveller is one of the best rules sets for Traveller out there. It's kind of misleading with the title. "Starter" makes you think that it is a beginner edition of the rules that doesn't have all the "stuff" of other rules sets.

Actually, there's stuff in Starter Traveller that is listed no where else. The DM for Starship Pulse Lasers comes to mind. Also, the implementation of Range Bands + Book 2 Space Combat is still my favorite version of Traveller space combat.

Starter Traveller is definitely worth having.

If I had to order them, in order, I'd say: The Traveller Book, Starter Traveller, and then, last, I'd put the LBB's 1-3.

I've been looking a bit at the supplied starships. My 1st ed LBB2 does not have the Type T Patrol Cruiser, Type L Laboratory ship, or the Type K Safari ship. LBB2-1st also has a lower price for the Type M - 419.67 MCr vs 445.95 MCr. The LBB2-1st has 80 low berths in the Type M and a price of 219.87 MCr vs 20 low berths and a price of 236.97 MCr.

Interesting......

Each of the three main rulesets are 95% the same, with 5% of their content unique to that version. The Traveller Books has a few things in it that Starter Traveller doesn't have. Starter Traveller has stuff that neither the TB or LBB 1-3 have, and so on.

For example: The TB has rules for cover and concealment. ST and LBB 1-3 don't have that.

ST has the Pulse Lasers DM and Range Band Space Combat, which is not included in either the TB or LBB 1-3.

LBB 1-3 has some things in them that aren't included in ST or TB, as well.

Chronology? Don't quote me, but I think it's:

LBB 1-3 1st edition (which is much different from 2nd edition)

LBB 1-3 2nd edition (which is what we all think of as the LBBs)

The Traveller Book

Starter Traveller

I believe that's the publishing order.
