Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
Personally I am using Autocad Fusion ..its a trim down of 'inventor' and is near perfect for the 3d-print end of the market
3d falls into three catagories
Solid geometrics rectangles spheres etc
Surfaces
digital clay sculpting
Fusion has all three in one package... its not the prog if you want to create a figurine... but if you want a centaur or a treecat you can blend the files.
It has a decal function for sliding those imperial stars onto a wing
It has a render engine that can give nice results from a basic set of skins but isn't great with background... its tweeked for back lighting gizmos rather than vista renders.
I use it to generate 3d print-ables and CGI renders that I then take to photoshop for extensive rework.
Has a free trial period but is quite expensive... but still a lot cheaper than a pro licence by a factor of 5
CG Textures - Yes, like the name suggests, it's textures in raw form. [free, requires sign-up now, limited downloads (15MB I think?) at free level] http://www.cgtextures.com/
Flaming Pear Downloads- Near the bottom of the download page are a bunch of useful FREE Photoshop Plugins. Worth it just for Solidify A IMO [free] http://www.flamingpear.com/download.html
makeHuman- This is a FOSS human figure generator similar to Poser in concept. Close integration to Blender as it started out development as a plugin for that application. Also can use renderMan complaint FOSS renderers like Aqsis and Pixie [free, in BETA-testing] http://www.makehuman.org/
