Albatross Class Research Vessel

This is basically an update from something I started in the Art Gallery.

I was in the process of doing the write up on the ship when I realized I had lost the original file which contained the rough draft of the vessel. As I was recreating the original drawing, when I noticed how small the reactor was compared to the rest of the ship.. Then I realized how silly the engine in the boom was. This was followed by the realization there were no vehicles for the crew to expand their exploration range. So redesigned the prototype to include these missing items.

Needless to say, I now have three ships based off one design.

Like the Marvara study I did, I redesigned the interiors and rearranged the engines. I added things which I believed were necessary for a long range/duration scout vessel. I'm now finally to the point where I can start making the ship cards and the depictions for the ship. I still have to do some writing on the description and run the designs through HGS.

After I finish posting this, I'll post the update picture of the Albatross in color this time.

Oh kay, I got the ship card done and the rooms labeled. I'll be posting it to the file library here shortly.

I just realized how complicated this write up is going to be since there is an awful lot of details and ideas need to be explained about MTU in order for you to understand some of creative process it took to design this ship.

Anyway take a look and judge for yoursevles.

If you want to throw your 2 cents in, please use this posting as away to express it. I'm still fine tuning the drawing and the room description...

...One other thing. the ship isn't suppose to be perfect. Like I said in my first post, this is 2nd of three ships. I'm taking a bad design and trying to make it good...

I am working on a novel involving a research/expedition/colony ship, with a crew of about 75. I had initially thought of using something like the Leviathan Merchant Cruiser, which is unable to land on a planet with atmosphere, but your design looks very good. Do you allow for cold-berths for use in transporting animals/livestock, and what is the size of the crew?

No on the cold berths and the crew is sitting at 28 at the momemt. I haven't figured out the tonnage of the cargo bays yet which is were I would store animals in lower berths. I have given a thought of expanding the crew by 14 by making the double occupancy rooms into triple occapancy rooms. I had already intended to use the Colapsable Steerage Unit to transport troops in war time as it is depicted in the Art Gallery. After doing the math, that would allow the Albatross to carry 70 personal.

use my ship, the ISS Lewis. crew of 70 but can hold considerably more. it's linked in the signature below.

Well its offical, the ship is coming in around 1500 tons. I ran it through HGS, and it came up with a crew of 26 which is close to what I had planned. I used Book 5 in HGS. Still working on room descriptions and the ship depiction.

I just posted a drawing in Equipment showing the reactor set I'm using in the Albatross. The heat exchanger was a quick cut and paste drawing but it gives you the ruff size of the entire reactor system. The decks are 4.5 meters tall. and my little guy is 1.8 meters tall. The scale goes up to 6 meter and is to scale with the drawing.

The room descriptions are done. I'll be posting them in the morning since I've had a long day of work and have to convert it over to jpeg before posting.

After they have been posted, I will gladly discuss the rooms you have any questions about and any changes anything you might have that will enhance the room's descriptions. If need be, I will post an enlarged picture of the room and label each item in it to help flesh out the design.

Just remember two things: I'm only one man and some of the items in these rooms are not drawn to scale because they are depictions of the function of each room. An example of this are the beds in my staterooms. I'm quite aware they oversize but the room size is correct for a 1.5 by 1.5 square grid.

(THIS IS NOT advertisement) Neopaint by Neosoft. They have a web site and it cost about $50. Check out their website for more details.

The General Overview of the ship is about to be posted and the ship's background as well. This will be my first PDF using a Word plug-in.

As I stated at the beginning of this post, I have three designs sitting on my computer. The Gull, Albatross and Swan. Its shows the design process as well as making for an interesting project.

None of these drawing are really finalized as yet and I'm hoping for input by this forum on the final configuration for the Swan. If I have time this weekend, I'll post the Gull after I make a few changes which I thought of while looking at some pictures on the internet.
