Anne McCaffrey has passed away...

This is a sad day for Science Fiction fans. The Dragonriders of Pern were a classic in there own time. She will be missed...

Our Prays go out to the family.

Sad indeed, I too lost uncounted hours engrossed in tales of Pern but I think I still most like her Brain and Brawn Ship series. They were the first I read of her works and fit better with my preference for science fiction.

I heard an interview with her years ago. Apparently she wrote a series of stories about a young orphan wizard who grows up with magic, but, for whatever reason, the series never took off. She seemed pretty bitter about it, and took a stab at J.R. Rowling and the reading public en large. l never understood where that emotion came from given her success with her other work.

Regardless, she was very talented, and the world has lost a creative mind.

Because J.K. Rowling is a billionaire and Anne McCaffrey wasn't.

Yeah, you know, I think I commented in the car "Maybe you're stuff wasn't that good." meaning her wizard story, not her other works for which she is praised and rightfully honored.

Her talents will be missed.

Odds are with CGI the way it is her Dragonrider series may be done one day. It has a built in fan base and a solid history.

She will be missed I read crystal singer way back when but have not really read much of her work I should. It would be nice to see a film version of her books. Just because there has to be someone making films from authors work instead of slapped together high budget remakes.

I really couldn't get into the actual Pern books; they just never grabbed me. I did like the concepts and the world and had the Altas and Dragonlover's Guide to Pern. It ha a recipe for Klah in it that I remember making, lol. They were both good books and I used them to inspire a few AD&D games.

Shocking news. I'll have to pass it along to my friends. One of them was anxiously awaiting her new book....

Which will likely be finished by her son Todd*.

After all, Todd has co-authored** Anne's last 4 Pern books (including Dragon's Time (June 2011, sequel to Dragongirl) and was co-authoring two more: Dragonrider (expected spring 2012, sequel to Dragon's Time) and After the Fall is Over (long in progress; sequel to The Skies of Pern).

He also wrote 3 others solo.

I believe he has also been helping her with After the Fall is Over, despite her statement in the first interview listed below, because of her second statement below.

* In regards to After the Fall is Over, Hans van der Boom reported 2008/2009 that McCaffrey at age 82 had warned its completion may not be possible: "with recurring health problems, it is very hard to find the energy ...". • Recently (2011), regarding collaboration with Todd, Anne McCaffrey says "I still am a bit possessive when it comes to the futures of F'lar and Lessa.["After the Fall"] ... Not only have I enjoyed helping Todd wrap up this very dramatic part of Pernese history, but my own creative juices have been flowing thick and furious: I've been writing up a storm on my own, too."

** She said of collaboration with Todd and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, "while I would dearly love to have the energy to tell a tale all on my own, I really cannot say that I am not ably represented with my collaborations." Doing Pern with Todd she was mainly "making suggestions or being a sounding board."

I wonder if she even published it; I'm assuming not. If she did, I'd love to read it to determine where it stood against Potter.

Thoth's two credits.
